Norwich City Football Club spent their early existence in the lower regions of English football but since the 1970s have found themselves yo-yoing between the top two divisions. Known as the Canaries, the club are currently competing in the second tier of the English pyramid, the Championship.

Norwich City Updates

Under David Wagner, Norwich City made last season’s Championship playoffs only to lose out to Leeds United in the semi-finals. The summer saw a change of manager, with Wagner being relieved of his duties and replaced by 35-year-old Dane Johannes Hoff Thorup of Nordsjaelland in his homeland.  

So far, Norwich’s current campaign has not gone how their supporters would have hoped as the club find themselves languishing in 14th place in the Championship. With only 18 points from 15 games, Thorup’s men find themselves closer to the relegation places than the playoff spots.

Norwich City are currently in a poor run of form and are not being helped by a long injury list. Scottish goalkeeper Angus Gunn has not played since early October, Marcelino Nunez is missing from the midfield and last season’s top scorer Josh Sargent is also on the treatment table.

Norwich City Transfer News & Rumours

Norwich City were incredibly busy during the summer transfer window and saw a big turnover of their squad. The club spent £19.5 million on new signings, making them the fourth biggest spenders in the division. Some of that money was spent on players such as £9 million man Ante Crnac from Rakow in Poland and Amankwah Forson from RB Salzburg for around £3.5 million.

Despite their spending, the club still made a profit of close to £13 million having recouped £32.2 million in the market. Gabriel Sara was sold to Turkish giants Galatasaray for close to £15 million and Adam Idah made his move to Celtic permanent for around £9 million. Current top scorer Borja Sainz is the latest player linked with an exit as the likes of Atletico Madrid and Galatasaray are said to be interested in his services.

Norwich City Signings

Norwich City’s biggets outlay of the summer came in the form of Croatian attacker Ante Crnac who they shelled out over £9 million to get to Carrow Road. Crnac is a Croatia Under 21 international who fired nine goals in all competitions for his old club Rakow last season. 

During a transfer window that was heavily focussed around young players, further new additions from Europe included the close to £4 million signing of Ghanaian midfielder Amankwah Forson and Panamanian centre back Jose Cordoba for another £3,000,000.

Norwich City Key Matches Of The Season

If Norwich are to get close to challenging for a playoff spot, they are going to have to put an unbeaten run together and beat those teams that are also in the playoff hunt. They have a huge four days in January when they visit Sheffield United and Leeds United and will finish their season with some tough tests against Burnley, Millwall and Middlesbrough.

Norwich City Key Achievements

Norwich City won their first piece of silverware in the 1961/62 season when they beat Rochdale 4-0 over in a two-legged League Cup final. They achieved First Division football for the very first time a decade later when they won the Second Division title. 

In the mid 1980s, the club secured their second League Cup win as they beat Sunderland 1-0 at Wembley Stadium. That same season saw the club relegated but they bounced back immediately with another Second Division championship.

Norwich once again won the Second Division in 2004 but, after two relegations, they would drop to the third tier of English football for the 2009/10 season. They gained promotion as champions of the division and went straight up again to the Premier League. 

They would again be relegated and became, for a brief period at least, something of a yo-yo club as they added the 2018/19 and 2020/21 Championship titles to the trophy cabinet.

Norwich City Current Squad

Norwich City invested heavily in their squad over the summer in a bid to challenge for promotion. With a number of players also leaving, there was a high turnover of players at Carrow Road.

Norwich City Attackers

Norwich City have multiple options in the attacking third of the pitch, with young Spaniard Borja Sainz standing out as the start performer this term. Josh Sargent, the 24-year-old United States of America international striker, was the club's top scorer last season and is one of the most valuable members of the squad with a market value of around £12 million. Former Burnley striker Ashley Barnes adds experience to the frontline, having made over 500 appearances across the top five divisions. 

Norwich City Midfielders

The impressive Chilean Mercelino Nunez is joined in midfield by the experienced Scotland international Kenny McLean. Nunez, who has 29 caps for Chile, has scored twice this season while the 48-cap McLean has chipped in with three assists. The club spent close to £4 million on securing the services of Ghanaian midfielder Amankwah Forson from RB Salzburg.

Norwich City Defenders

On loan Manchester City defender Callum Doyle is currently the club's top performer and has also contributed five assists and created a further three big chances for his team mates. Doyle is joined in defence by the vastly experienced Republic of Ireland international Shane Duffy and long serving Scotland international Grant Hanley. Young Panamanian defender Jose Cordoba has joined the club from Levski Sofia and former Bournemouth man Jack Stacey fills the right back spot.

Norwich City Goalkeepers

Norwich City have three first team goalkeepers in Angus Gunn, George Long and Archie Mair. Gunn was signed for around £5 million from Southampton in 2021 and was Scotland's starting keeper at Euro 24. Long, who has been in possession of the number jersey for Norwich's most recent outings, is a former Sheffield United, Hull City and Millwall keeper. Mair has had multiple loans at clubs such as Lincoln City and Morecambe but has yet to make a first team appearance for the Canaries.

Norwich City Manager & Coaching Staff

Norwich City replaced David Wagner in the summer despite finishing in the playoff places last season. Wagner was replaced by Dane Johannes Hoff Thorup, who left FC Nordsjælland to join the Carrow Road outfit. In what was a big change behind the scenes over the summer for the Canaries, Thorup has brought in a new assistant manager, goalkeeping coach and first team coach. 

Johannes Hoff Thorup

Thorup is a 35-year-old Danish manager who took charge at Carrow Road in the summer of 2024, having left FC Nordsjælland in his homeland. His time with FC Nordsjælland began in 2015 when he took on the role of youth coach with the club before being promoted to assistant manager in 2021. He was elevated to the top job in January 2023.

He has managed in European competition when he led his former side into the group stages of the UEFA Conference League during the 2023/24 season. Thorup was appointed head coach of Norwich in May, ending his nine year association with FC Nordsjælland.

Glen Riddersholm

Assistant manager Riddersholm joined Norwich alongside Thorup having coached multiple sides in Denmark as well as Belgian side Genk. He led FC Midtjylland to their first Danish Superliga title in 2014/15 before having short spells in charge of Genk and Swedish side IFK Norrkoping.

Riddersholm departed IFK Norrkoping in November 2023 and was announced as assistant to new Norwich City head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup in May 2024. 

Nick Stanley

Stanley is the first team and set pieces coach at Norwich and is another staff member to have been appointed in 2024. He had held different roles with Brighton and Hove Albion since 2012, moving onto the first team staff in 2015. His roles covered analysis and set pieces under Graham Potter and Roberto de Zerbi.

Tony Roberts

Roberts is the head of goalkeeping at Carrow Road having been appointed in September 2024 following the departure of Paul Clements to Stoke City. 

Since ending his playing days, that saw him represent Queens Park Rangers and Dagenham & Redbridge among others, Roberts has held coaching roles with clubs such as Arsenal, Swansea City, AC Milan and the Wales national team.

Jack Wilshere

Former Arsenal and England midfielder Wilshere has recently left his position as head coach of Arsenal's Under-18s to take on a first team coaching role with Thorup and Norwich. 

Wilshere won the FA Cup twice during his 197 appearances for the Gunners and won 34 England caps, scoring twice.

Norwich City Former Managers & Key Coaches

Johannes Hogg Thorup was appointed Norwich City's head coach in May 2024, becoming the club’s third permanent manager in less than 18 months. The Dane replaced David Wagner who had been in charge since January 2023 and achieved a playoff berth in his only full season. Wagner had been installed in January 2023 after Dean Smith was shown the door. Before Smith, Daniel Farke had been in charge of the club for four and a half years.

• Daniel Farke spent four and a half years in charge at Carrow Road and twice led the club to the Championship title and Premier League football.
• Dean Smith was appointed in an attempt to stop Norwich being relegated from the Premier League for a record sixth time. Having failed and with the following season starting poorly, he was let go.
• David Wagner had gained promotion from the Championship with Huddersfield Town and managed Schalke 04 and Young Boys before arriving at Carrow Road.

Other notable managers of the club include Archie Macaulay who guided the then Third Division side to the FA Cup semi-final in 1959. Willie Reid was in charge when the club won its first major silverware, the 1962 League Cup.

Ron Saunders won the Second Division title in 1972, securing top-flight football for the first time in Norwich’s history. In the mid-1980s, Ken Brown secured a second League Cup title as well as winning the Second Division championship.

In the club’s more modern history, Nigel Workington took the Canaries to the top division as champions in 2004 and Paul Lambert secured back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League.

Norwich City Legends

Kevin Keelan

He is Norwich City Football Club’s record appearance holder, having represented the club on 673 occasions. Keelan was an ever-present in the side that gained First Divison status for the first time in the club’s history in 1972.

Martin Peters

He was a £50,000 signing in 1975. The World Cup winner played over 200 times for the Canaries and helped the club secure a regular place in the top-flight

Ron Saunders

Ron was appointed manager of Norwich City in 1969 and led them to the First Division three years later. He guided the club to top-flight safety and took Norwich to a League Cup where they lost to Tottenham Hotspur.

Wes Hoolahan

Wes spent a decade at Carrow Road, turning out over 350 times and contributing 54 goals and 75 assists. He is revered by fans of Norwich and is a member of the club’s Hall of Fame.

Grant Holt

He is another Hall of Famer who was with the club as they went from League One to the Premier League under Paul Lambert. Holt managed 78 goals and 35 assists in 168 appearances.

Duncan Forbes

Duncan dedicated almost half his life to Norwich City, serving them as a player for 13 years before taking on roles behind the scenes. Loved by those at the club, Forbes was part of the side that won the Second Division in 1972.

Johnny Gavin

He is the club’s leading scorer of all time. Having joined the club Limerick in 1948 for £1,500 before going on to smash 132 goals across two spells with the Canaries.

Norwich City moved to Carrow Road in 1935 and the stadium is now a 27,244 all-seater stadium complete with undersoil heating and a hybrid pitch.

Over the years, the stadium has undergone many developments including the building of the Geoffrey Watling Stand. The stand was built after its predecessor burnt down and cost £1.7 million, being used for the first time in 1986.

Carrow Road has hosted Under 21 internationals and concerts and has ample catering facilities and a hotel that provides pitch views.

Norwich City Rivalries & Notable Matches

Norwich City’s biggest rivals are Ipswich Town, with the two clubs competing in the East Anglia derby. The two fierce rivals have faced each other on 120 occasions, with Norwich winning 48 of those match ups.  

Norwich is currently the ‘Pride of Anglia’ as they haven’t tasted defeat against their rivals for over 15 years! The last time Ipswich Town tasted victory against their bitter rivals was back in 2009 and they haven't won at Carrow Road since 2006.

Norwich's largest victory in the derby was way back in 1904 when they triumphed by six goals to one on Ipswich turf. The most recent meeting ended in a 1-0 victory for the Canaries at Carrow Road, thanks to a Marcelino Nunez strike.

Two of the most important recent meetings came in 2015 when the pair met in the Championship playoff semi-finals. The first leg at Portman Road ended 1-1 after Jonny Howson's goal for Norwich was cancelled out by Paul Anderson.

The second leg saw Norwich run out 3-1 winners, having been helped by the sending off of Ipswich defender Christophe Berra just after half-time. Goals from Norwich legend Wes Hoolahan, Nathan Redmond and Cameron Jerome saw the Canaries advance to Wembley.

Norwich City Facts

Norwich City History

Norwich City were founded in 1902 and have played their home fixtures at Carrow Road since 1935.  Having been relegated to the third division before World War Two, Norwich would have to apply for re-election in the two seasons after the league recommenced. 

Norwich just missed out on promotion under the leadership of Norman Low but finished bottom of the Football League in 1956/57 under Tom Parker.  

Off the field problems were mounting and the club were facing severe financial difficulties, with debts of more than £20,000. The club were rescued by a new board, chaired by Geoffrey Watling, and an appeal fund ran by Arthur South, the Lord Mayor of Norwich. The fund raised the £20,000 and both men were honoured with stands bearing their names at Carrow Road. 

Archie Macaulay was appointed manager and would lead the club to an achievement still revered today. As a third division club, Macaulay and his men would go all the way to the 1958/59 FA Cup semi finals.

On their way to the last four, the Canaries defeated First Division opposition, most famously beating Matt Busby’s Manchester United 3-0. They were eventually defeated by another First Division side Luton Town after a replay.

It wasn't until 1962 that the club celebrated their first trophy in the shape of the Football League Cup, beating Rochdale 4-0 over two legs. A decade later, Ron Saunders guided the club to the First Division for the very first time. In 1985, the Canaries became the first club to win a major trophy and be relegated in the same season when they won the League Cup again but slipped into the second tier. 

The Second Division title was secured in 1986 and with it a return to the top flight. City would spend nine years in the top flight and would emerge as surprise title challengers in the early years of the Premier League. Their third place finish earned a place in the UEFA Cup, where they became the first British team to beat Bayern Munich as the Olympiastadion.

Norwich were eventually relegated from the Premier League in 1995 and wouldn't return again until another First Division title was won in 2004. After just one season in the top division, the Canaries were back in the Championship and would remain there until being relegated to the third tier in 2009. Paul Lambert led the club back to the Championship and straight into the Premier League, guiding the club to a 12th place finish. 

Lambert resigned to join Aston Villa and was replaced by Chris Hughton. The former Republic of Ireland international led the club to an 11th place finish in the Premier League but they were relegated again in 2014. Hughton was replaced by former player Neil Adams who didn't last long before Alex Neil replaced him.

The decision to hire Neil proved a masterstroke as the club's form turned round and they achieved an immediate return to the Premier League via the playoffs. Their stay back in the top flight was short lived and it was second tier football for the Canaries again in the 2016/17 season.

Daniel Farke was appointed manager in May 2017, becoming the first in the club’s history who was not from the British Isles. In his second season, Farke guided the Canaries back to the Premier League as winners of the Championship.

However, the following season took on a very familiar pattern as City were relegated back to the Championship after just one season. With this relegation came the dubious honour of being the first club in Premier League history to be relegated five times.

Norwich’s status as a yo-yo club would be further confirmed as they were again crowned winners of the Championship, with it earning a spot back in the Premier League for 2021/22.

They failed to win any of their opening nine league matches and Farke was eventually dismissed in November 2021 and replaced by Dean Smith. The former Aston Villa boss was unable to save the club from a record sixth Premier League relegation and was dismissed in December 2022. 

His replacement was the former Huddersfield Town boss, David Wagner. In his first full season in charge, Wagner led his team to the playoffs where they were defeated 4-0 by Leeds United over two legs. This defeat led to his sacking and the appointment of Johannes Hoff Thorup from FC Nordsjælland.
