League Two, which has the full name English Football League Two, is the fourth-highest football tier in England, but it still had quite an impressive average attendance record of 5,302 during the 2023/24 season.

Below we will take you through how League 2 standings are calculated and how teams gain promotion and avoid relegation. After that, we will check out the best and worst performing teams and provide some intriguing stats.

Above you can see the League two table, and it will be constantly updated throughout the season. Pay attention to this table as it gives you a very solid indication as to which teams are performing and which ones are struggling.

Understanding the EFL League Two Standings

League Two is made up of 24 teams and has a Round Robin format. Each team, between August and May, will play the other 23 teams twice, one time at home and one time away.

This means that in order to complete the season, each team must play 46 matches – eight more games than they play in the EPL and the same amount that is played in League 1 and the Championship.

How are the teams ranked with each passing week? Well, this is what we are now going to concern ourselves with.

How the EFL League Two Standings are Calculated

A team’s standings will be based on how many points they manage to pick up over the course of the season.

Three points are awarded for a win, one point for a draw, and a losing team will get no points. The more points a team earns, the higher up the table they will find themselves.

If two teams find themselves on the same points, then the three divisive factors that are used to separate them can be seen below:

1. Goal difference

2. Number of goals scored

3. Head-to-head record

If two or more team have the same points and there is promotion or relegation on the line, the teams will need to partake in a play-off system to determine their final position.

Promotion and Relegation Rules in The English Football System

At the end of the campaign, the teams that occupy spots one, two, and three will get automatic promotion to League One.

The four teams that finish in fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh will have to contest the play-offs, where fourth plays against seventh and fifth plays against sixth in home and away ties.

The two winners will then play in a one-legged final at Wembley Stadium in London.

Regarding relegation, the two teams that finish in 24th and 23rd will drop down to the National League. We are not entirely sure why it only two teams that drop down, when the standard number is usually three.

Top of the League Two Table

Gillingham, despite finishing 12th last season, were one of the favourites for promotion as they made some class signings in the shape of Marcus Wyllie and Elliot Nevitt.

They have lived up to this billing as they are currently sitting at the top of the table with 19 points from name games.

They have scored 12 goals in total, but their current success can be put down to the fact that they have a strong defence which has only been breached three times.

EFL League Two Teams in Danger of Relegation

Accrington Stanley is the team that is propping up the 2024/25 EFL League Two as they are yet to pick up a win from the eight matches that they have played. They are averaging just 1.13 goals per match, while they have been conceding an average of two goals.

If they do not buck their ideas up quickly, they will leave themselves with far too much work to do to prevent themselves from being relegated to the National League.

EFL League Two Goals Scored & Conceded

League Two might be the fourth tier of English football, but the matches still have plenty of draw and are attended by thousands of football fans.

Goals are never in short supply in this league, as can be seen from the fact that there was an average of 2.98 goals per game during the 2023/24 season. This is nearly 0.5 goals more per game than in League 1.

Over the previous ten seasons, the most impressive scorers have been Stockport, who managed 96 goals in 46 matches during the 2023/24 season.

Their top scorer in the league was Isaac Olaofe, who scored 20 goals. At the other end of the table, the worst defence belongs to Morecambe, who conceded 91 goals during the 2015/16 campaign.
