Gary Hutchinson
Gary Hutchinson is the founder of the Real EFL, which he started in 2018. He is now the Editor-in-Chief, looking to help grow the site into one of the foremost authorities in the English Football League.
Professional Background
Gary has been a writer for more than 20 years, writing for Sky Sports and newspapers such as the Lincolnshire Echo. After writing his first book, Suited and Booted, he went full-time in 2016, starting out with the local Lincoln news site, The Lincolnite. He started his Lincoln City blog, The Stacey West, in the same year and has been writing ever since.
He founded The Real EFL in 2018, tired of seeing sites that claimed to be EFL-centric but often omitted to cover the teams in League One and League Two. Originally, that was the site’s focus, but as it has grown, the Championship also became a key component. Through several strategic moves, The Real EFL has gone from being a bedroom project to a major news outlet.
Gary also created, published and distributed a football magazine called A City United in 2017/18, delivering local football news from the Lincolnshire area. That involved covering everything from Sunday League games to local women’s teams, as well as planning distribution and logistics.
As well as penning for sports sites and founding The Real EFL, Gary also has a background in working with iGaming clients. While working for a major marketing and SEO company, he held the position of Senior Content Strategist, constructing articles for several major iGaming clients, managing their accounts, developing topics and editing others’ work.
He now runs his website, The Stacey West, and is focused on his role at The Real EFL. Gary also runs an alternative media course for Year Nine students within the Lincoln area, teaching alternative journalism in the current marketplace.
Role at The Real EFL
Since starting the Real EFL, Gary has been involved in its growth and has remained so since the site was taken over. His current role includes writing and editing articles, managing the team of writers and working with Jamie Ward to ensure that the predictions are completed on time and accurately every day.
He is also involved in the digital output, hosting the weekly YouTube preview show with Kyle Kennealey. His days are taken up researching and creating fresh and innovative articles as the site strives to become a major force in the English football news sector.
Certifications and Education
Gary completed a London School of Journalism diploma in feature writing in 2016 and worked voluntarily for the Lincolnshire Echo on multiple occasions when print media was still relevant.
Personal Insights
Gary has always loved the written word, a passion that stemmed from a Primary School visit to the Lincoln Standard offices in October 1987. That, coupled with his love of Lincoln City, has always fuelled his passion.
Inspired by the great Maurice Burton, a Lincoln City journalist of much repute, Gary has always believed in the power of the word in informing generations of supporters. Without journalists, games and goals could easily be forgotten, but as soon as something is committed to paper or computer screens, it becomes available for future generations.
The world of iGaming has become a vehicle by which this cherished profession remains relevant. Sadly, print media is no longer popular, and social media has made news reporting difficult, but thanks to the financial benefits of the iGaming sector, online journalism is booming.
Gary also has a keen interest in SEO, link development, and the many ways in which iGaming has impacted that, creating a whole new industry that is still very much in its infancy. Being at the forefront of that helps keep Gary motivated and interested daily.
