League One is the third highest tier in English football behind the Championship and the English Premier League. It is a popular league across England, and below we are going to take a look at how the EFL standings are calculated and how promotion and relegation work.
We will then check out the teams that are doing well and those who are struggling before providing some interesting statistics.
At the top of the page there is the League One table, and it will update after each passing round. We recommend that you bookmark this page so that you have quick access to the table whenever you want to check it out.
The table indicates the form of each team, so it can be helpful if you are going to bet on the league. For more such information, visit our homepage.
Understanding the EFL League One Standings
There are 24 teams in League One and between August and May they play each other with the main aim of finishing as high as they possibly can up the table. In this part of our guide, we are going to explain how each team is ranked and will then have a look at the rules for promotion and relegation.
How the EFL League One Standings are Calculated
League One, like most of the other professional football leagues in England, use a round robin format. Everyone must play each team twice with one game being played at home and the other being played away.
As the league is composed of 24 teams, each team must play a total of 46 games in order to complete their season.
For each match, three points are awarded to the winning team, one point to both teams if it is a draw, and zero points to the losing team.
The teams get ranked in the League One table according to how many points they manage to muster. If two or more teams have the same number of points, then goal difference, number of goals scored, and head-to-head record will be used to determine who finishes in what spot.
A play-off will be used to finalise a team’s position if none of the previous determiners can do so, and relegation or promotion is at stake.
Promotion and Relegation Rules in EFL English Football System
Come the end of the season in May, the two teams that finish in first and second will be automatically promoted to the Championship.
Those teams who finish in third, fourth, fifth, and sixth will qualify for the play-offs, where one team will be promoted.
The team in third will play the team in 6th and the team in 4th will play the team in 5th in two-legged semi-finals. The final, which is worth a lot of money, is played at Wembley Stadium.
At the other end of the table, the four teams that finish in 24th, 23rd, 22nd, and 21st place will be relegated to League 2.
Top of the League One Table
A number of poor decisions by the higher ups led to Birmingham City being relegated to the third tier of English football. They have a fight on their hands to climb back up the football pyramid.
They hired a new manager in the form of Chris Davies and bought a number of new players in the summer, and it seems to be paying dividends as Birmingham are sitting in first place with seven wins and a draw from their first eight matches.
They have a five point gap over Wrexham in second place.
EFL League One Teams in Danger of Relegation
At the bottom of the table, Cambridge United are the team that are struggling the most as they have only managed to pick up one point from eight matches. They have conceded an average of two goals per game and are scoring an average of 0.75 goals per match.
It looks like they are going to be the whipping boys of the league. Shrewsbury Town, Burton Albion, and Crawley Town are the three other teams who are struggling to get above the drop zone.
