Norwich City are on the lookout for a new manager after The Canaries decided to sack Johannes Hoff Thorup after just under a season in charge. The Danish international replaced David Wagner in the summer after a failed promotion push which ended with a sixth-placed finish. Hoff Thorup managed to keep the Carrow Road club in contention to replicate that feat but poor form in recent weeks has made a top-six finish impossible and condemned Norwich to a fourth straight season in the EFL Championship.

An interim coaching setup has been put in place for the last two games of City’s season, led by former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere. The betting market will change rapidly as the situation to find a new manager develops, with candidates’ odds likely to spike should their name be mentioned in credible reports, and plummet if they are ruled out of the running.

Who Will Be The Norwich City Manager

With Norwich’s recent history as a Premier League and perennial promotion contenders, The Canaries will look to appoint someone with experience in the top flight and someone who can get them back into promotion conversations next season. A few managers who have taken charge in the Premier League this season are yet to find a new job, meaning there are plenty of people who fit this criteria.

Russell Martin

Overview:

The 39-year-old won the playoffs with Southampton last season but was sacked by The Saints in December 2024 as the club look on track to beat Derby County’s record low points total in the Premier League. Has previous Championship experience with Swansea City prior to being appointed by Southampton.

Strengths and Style:

Martin was known for his possession-based approach which came in handy to secure Southampton promotion through a play-off final victory at Wembley over Leeds United. He largely stuck to these principles in the Premier League and could be seen as the main catalyst to being sacked by the South Coast club in December.

Odds Analysis:

Is the favourite due to his previous links to the club, with a nine-year spell playing for The Canaries. Also linked with the Rangers job.

Gary O’Neil

Overview:

Managed in the Premier League with Wolverhampton Wanderers and AFC Bournemouth. Has never managed in the English Football League but has extensive knowledge through his playing career. Wolves sacked him in December 2024 as the club were in a relegation dogfight.

Strengths and Style:

Prefers to play without possession and narrowed their lines to force teams to come through the block. Likes to use short passing play feeding into two forwards. However, this was used for two lower-table Premier League sides, and may have a more possession based approach in the Championship.

Odds Analysis:

Also has a playing connection with The Canaries, appearing 55 times across two seasons. Also linked with the West Bromwich Albion and Southampton jobs.

Steve Cooper

Overview:

The second manager to be sacked in the Premier League this season, Cooper was in charge at Leicester City but did not have the backing of the fans from the get-go. Has experience in gaining promotion from the Championship, leading Nottingham Forest to the Premier League through the playoffs and is the one of the most recent managers to keep a promoted side in the top flight for more than a season.

Strengths and Style:

Cooper has been flexible with the way he structured his sides, deploying back three, four and five formations across his career. With Norwich set for a rebuild this summer, he can choose whichever style he feels best with the existing crop of players and any new signings he could make. Cooper says he prefers to dominate possession and win the ball back as quickly as possible.

Odds Analysis:

Has three top six finishes as a Championship manager, two with Swansea City and his successful campaign with Nottingham Forest. Will be out of contention for the Leicester job, meaning less competition should the Canaries choose the Under-17 World Cup-winning boss.

Sean Dyche

Overview:

One of the Championship’s most successful managers, Dyche has two promotions under his belt, one of which coming as champions in 2016/17. Was at Everton until January, when The Toffees brought back iconic manager David Moyes after their season floundered once more.

Strengths and Style:

Defence was the name of the game for Dyche during his Premier League years, making Burnley into one of the most horrible places to go for teams with issues breaking down low blocks. Set-piece goals are a big opportunity for his sides, with pragmatism perhaps the best way to describe his style.

Odds Analysis:

Was not overly impressive whilst at Everton, so may take a chance at bringing a Championship side back into the Premier League. Longer odds as more likely to prefer a Premier League role before committing to a second-tier side.

Rob Edwards

Overview:

Won an unlikely promotion with Luton Town through the Championship playoffs two seasons ago, and The Hatters were the best of the promoted sides in the Premier League that season. Has further Championship experience with Watford. Was sacked by Luton after a disastrous start to the season which has the club fighting for their Championship survival just 48 months after their Wembley triumph.

Strengths and Style:

His Luton Town side were focused on counterpressing sides, but that failed to get them results in the Championship and that led to his dismissal from Kenilworth Road. Used a 5-3-2 formation, but changed his approach between divisions. used two defensive midfielders and a box-to-box player to link up to his strikers.

Odds Analysis:

A long-shot for most jobs, may fancy his chances at a Premier League side due to how close he was to securing survival with Luton Town.

Understanding Managerial Betting Markets

There are a few managerial betting markets, most often on which manager is the next to be sacked by a club and which manager will be appointed at a club. The markets are likely to fluctuate as news will break frequently on how secure a manager’s job is and how far a club is in negotiations with a potential managerial candidate. It is always crucial to keep up to date with the latest news from trusted sources to inform your decision making.

Norwich City Managerial History & Trends

Norwich City have often given their managers time to develop in the role but Johannes Hoff Thorup’s departure marks the first time they have sacked a manager after less than 12 months since Bryan Gunn in 2009. This could be ruled down to the change in ownership of the club, with previous custodians Delia and Michael Wynn-Jones being bought out by American businessman Mark Attanasio in October 2024.
