West Bromwich Albion are searching for a new manager after deciding to sack Tony Mowbray just months into his second spell at the club. After taking a break from football for health reasons, the 61-year-old was brought back to The Hawthorns to replace the outgoing Carlos Corberan, who was bought out of his contract by his hometown side in Spanish LaLiga outfit Valencia. After eight losses in 17 fixtures, many of which coming in recent weeks, The Baggies’ likelihood of playoff football has dwindled and after sitting in a strong position for most of the season, the club are extremely unlikely to replicate last season’s fifth place finish. That led to the ownership at Albion to sack Mowbray and putting James Morrison in interim charge for the final two games of the season.

Who Will Be The West Bromwich Albion Manager

Carlos Corberan made West Bromwich Albion into a playoff worthy side during his time in charge and the ownership group at West Brom will want someone who can replicate the Spaniard’s accomplishments. The club were a Premier League side five seasons ago and were a common fixture of the top flight for much of the past 15 years, so any potential candidate should have experience in both divisions.

Gary O’Neil

Overview:

Managed in the Premier League with Wolverhampton Wanderers and AFC Bournemouth. Has never managed in the English Football League but has extensive knowledge through his playing career. Wolves sacked him in December 2024 as the club were in a relegation dogfight.

Strengths and Style:

Prefers to play without possession and narrowed their lines to force teams to come through the block. Likes to use short passing play feeding into two forwards. However, this was used for two lower-table Premier League sides, and may have a more possession-based approach in the Championship.

Odds Analysis:

Has been without a job since December and has largely failed to impress in the top flight, so perhaps will take a job with a top-half second tier side. Also linked with the Norwich City and Southampton jobs. Would be crossing a derby divide should he head to The Hawthorns.

Steve Cooper

Overview:

The second manager to be sacked in the Premier League this season, Cooper was in charge at Leicester City but did not have the backing of the fans from the get-go. Has experience in gaining promotion from the Championship, leading Nottingham Forest to the Premier League through the playoffs and is the one of the most recent managers to keep a promoted side in the top flight for more than a season.

Strengths and Style:

Cooper has been flexible with the way he structured his sides, deploying back three, four and five formations across his career. Cooper says he prefers to dominate possession and win the ball back as quickly as possible.

Odds Analysis:

Has three top six finishes as a Championship manager, two with Swansea City and his successful campaign with Nottingham Forest. Will be out of contention for the Leicester job, meaning less competition should the Canaries choose the Under-17 World Cup-winning boss.

Liam Rosenior

Overview:

Was viewed as one of the best Championship managers whilst at Hull City and nearly got The Tigers into the playoffs last season before being sacked by owner Acun Ilicali for a difference in football philosophy. Has other EFL experience with Derby County. Currently managing in French Ligue 1 with Chelsea-affiliated Strasbourg, with the team in seventh place.

Strengths and Style:

Prefers calmer, more measured build-up play with possession as a main focus. Is not too aggressive in attacking, which was the reason he was sacked by Hull City. Focuses on younger talent, bringing through loanees like Fabio Carvalho and Tyler Morton at Hull, and named a starting 11 at Strasbourg where every player bar the goalkeeper was under the age of 23.

Odds Analysis:

Feels like a longshot, he signed a three-year deal with Strasbourg at the start of the season and has the Alsace club fighting for a place in European competitions.

Sean Dyche

Overview:

One of the Championship’s most successful managers, Dyche has two promotions under his belt, one of which came as champions in 2016/17. Was at Everton until January, when The Toffees brought back iconic manager David Moyes after their season floundered once more.

Strengths and Style:

Defence was the name of the game for Dyche during his Premier League years, making Burnley into one of the most horrible places to go for teams with issues breaking down low blocks. Set-piece goals are a big opportunity for his sides, with pragmatism perhaps the best way to describe his style.

Odds Analysis:

Was not overly impressive whilst at Everton, so may take a chance at bringing a Championship side back into the Premier League. Longer odds as more likely to prefer a Premier League role before committing to a second-tier side.

Steven Gerrard

Overview:

The Liverpool legend has failed to deliver on the momentum he gained when winning the Scottish Premiership with Rangers in 2021. Lasted just under a year in his next job at Aston Villa, which brought the Birmingham club close to the relegation zone before he was sacked. Spent the past two seasons in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ettifaq but left in January.

Strengths and Style:

Likes a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation, with attacking play and possession emphasised. He prefers to have wingers attack the wide areas before looking for full-backs on the overlap, similar to how his beloved Liverpool have played in recent years and has taken influence from previous managers like Rafa Benitez and Jurgen Klopp, who he was an academy coach under.

Odds Analysis:

Reputation has taken a knock in recent years due to his last two jobs, it may not be worth the risk akin to Wayne Rooney. Was previously linked to League Two Carlisle United in February.

There are a few managerial betting markets, most often on which manager is the next to be sacked by a club and which manager will be appointed at a club. The markets are likely to fluctuate as news will break frequently on how secure a manager’s job is and how far a club is in negotiations with a potential managerial candidate. It is always crucial to keep up to date with the latest news from trusted sources to inform your decision making.

West Bromwich Albion Managerial History & Trends

West Bromwich Albion are usually ruthless when it comes to managers if they do not perform. Only three of their last nine permanent bosses have lasted over a year in the job, and only three, Carlos Corberan, Slaven Bilic and Darren Moore, have win percentage records of 40% or more. Albion have tended to pick managers with a more pragmatic approach, with defensively minded managers like Sam Allardyce, Steve Bruce, Alan Pardew and Tony Pulis all holding the role within the past decade.
