Understanding Football League Tables
Each team plays the other sides twice per season home and away with final positions deciding title winners, play-off contenders and relegation.
What Do the Standings Mean?
Each result will be registered within the league table. Each win will feature in the W column, a draw in the D column and a loss in the L column. Goal difference (GD) is calculated by subtracting goals conceded (A) from goals scored (F) to give the total. 3 points are awarded for a win, 1 point for a draw and nothing for a loss, the Pts column is calculated from adding together all wins and draws.
As many as seven sides at the top of the table will contest promotion either automatically or via the play-offs, as many as the four bottom clubs can be relegated.
Promotion and Relegation Rules
At the season end, three clubs are promoted from the Championship to the Premier League, three clubs are relegated to League One. Three clubs are promoted from League One to the Championship, four clubs are relegated to League Two.
