Leicester City are managing the workload of talented winger Jeremy Monga as head coach Marti Cifuentes oversees a carefully controlled development plan.
Leicester City have been without regular contributions from Jeremy Monga across their last four matches. The 16 year old missed the defeat to Blackburn Rovers due to illness and remained an unused substitute against Middlesbrough, Norwich City and Stoke City.
Cifuentes has made it clear that the club must accept fluctuations in performance and physical readiness when handling a player of Monga’s age, particularly across a demanding Championship schedule.
Cifuentes Managing Workload After Busy International Schedule
Marti Cifuentes highlighted that Monga played three matches for England Under 19s during the international break, which added significant load before his return to domestic action. The manager confirmed that opportunities were considered during the weekend fixture against Stoke City, yet the decision was made to introduce Silko Thomas from the bench instead.
Cifuentes reiterated that he retains full faith in Monga’s long term potential while balancing immediate tactical needs.
I’ve spent today watching every touch Jeremy Monga has had in every game he’s played in men’s football. What a player, man. pic.twitter.com/VK0j1WB9eA

Despite recent bench roles, Leicester City continue to hold Monga in high regard after he featured in all but one of their opening twelve Championship matches. His early season involvement demonstrated both trust from the coaching staff and the winger’s readiness to contribute, yet the club are determined to avoid placing excessive strain on a developing player.

Leicester City Expect Monga To Feature Again Soon
Jeremy Monga is not expected to start the upcoming match against Southampton, with Stephy Mavididi in line to continue on the left flank following what Cifuentes described as his best performance of the season. Leicester City face a revitalised Saints side who have improved significantly following the early season dismissal of Will Still.
Cifuentes acknowledged the quality within the Southampton squad and made clear that selection decisions must reflect both form and game context.
Jeremy Monga out there doing nutmegs against experienced Championship full-backs when he’s only 16 🤣.
It’s a true joy to watch. He’ll be a massive star one day.

Even with rotation, the club maintain complete confidence that Monga will receive further minutes as the campaign progresses. Marti Cifuentes stressed that development remains a priority and that the teenager will continue to play a meaningful role once physical load, confidence and training indicators align. For Leicester City, short term adjustments form part of a long term plan to ensure one of their brightest prospects continues on a stable upward path.
Monga became the youngest Premier League 2 scorer in November 2024, which led to early first-team involvement despite continuing his schooling. Monga made his senior debut in April 2025 at 15 years and 271 days, becoming the second youngest Premier League player, and featured seven times before Leicester’s relegation.
In the Championship he became the club’s youngest ever starter in August 2025, then scored his first senior goal three days later, becoming the youngest goalscorer in Championship history at 16 years and 37 days. Internationally, he has represented England from under-15 to under-19 level where he has continued to progress.
