Wrexham Given Big Championship Boost As Duo Set For Comeback

Wrexham are closing in on key reinforcements as midfielder Andy Cannon and forward Jay Rodriguez move closer to full fitness for the Championship run-in.

Wrexham have received positive news on two long-term absentees, with Cannon and Rodriguez both stepping up their work on the training pitch. Cannon suffered a ruptured ACL in February against Mansfield Town, while Rodriguez has missed the entire season with a stress fracture.

Neither player was eligible for selection in the current EFL squad submission, but both are expected to be available once the registration window reopens in January.

Cannon And Rodriguez Step Up Progress As Wrexham Prepare For January Window

Cannon returned to full training recently, marking a significant milestone after nine months on the sidelines. Rodriguez has also resumed outdoor work and is progressing steadily after his lengthy absence. Their impending availability will offer a substantial boost to Wrexham as the club prepares for the latter stages of a competitive Championship campaign.

The current EFL squad list did not include either player due to the timing of their recoveries, but head coach Phil Parkinson will be able to make alterations in January. With the side pushing to build momentum after promotion, the return of two experienced performers could influence both selection depth and strategic planning in the second half of the season.

There was also early season encouragement surrounding midfielder Ollie Rathbone, who earned a place in the registered squad after being named Wrexham player of the year last season. Rathbone made his comeback in the 2-1 League Cup defeat to Cardiff City, but further progress has stalled following a minor setback. Parkinson confirmed the midfielder straightened his thigh in the build-up to a reserve match, prompting the club to manage his workload carefully to avoid recurring issues.

Further Assessments Expected As Wrexham Plan For Busy Fixture Run

Libby Cacace and Kieffer Moore were also unavailable for Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Ipswich Town, which extended Wrexham unbeaten league run to six matches. The pair remained at the training ground for rehabilitation work, and Parkinson will review their readiness ahead of the upcoming Championship fixture against Bristol City at The Racecourse.

Moore has played almost every minute this season and has been away with Wales internationally, leading the manager to believe that a brief enforced pause could ultimately benefit the striker. The coaching staff expect him to return in strong condition once cleared to train fully.

Looking ahead, Parkinson believes that the return of Cannon, Rodriguez and Rathbone will feel comparable to securing multiple January signings. All three remain central to Wrexham plans as the club continues its adaptation to the Championship and targets further progress across the second part of the season.
