Former Premier League And Championship Goalkeeper Announces SHOCK Retirement

Former Aston Villa and Norwich City goalkeeper Jed Steer has announced his retirement from professional football age of 33.

The experienced goalkeeper has been a free agent since leaving Peterborough United over the summer.

A Solid EFL Career

Jed Steer joined his boyhood club, Norwich City, at age nine, shining in the 2010–11 FA Youth Cup with a dramatic penalty save. Debuting for the Canaries in 2012, he made just two senior appearances before signing for Aston Villa in 2013. Loans to Yeovil Town, Cambridge United, Doncaster Rovers, and Huddersfield followed, honing his shot-stopping and command.

Steer’s Villa breakthrough came in 2019 after being recalled from Charlton Athletic; he displaced Orjan Nyland, sparking a 10-game win streak.

Heroics included two penalty saves in the play-off semi-final against West Brom, securing promotion via a Wembley triumph over Derby County, his first Premier League taste.

Injuries struck hard with two ruptured Achilles tendons, sidelining him for years, but resilience prevailed. After stints back at Charlton and brief Villa returns, he joined Peterborough United in January last year. There, the veteran mentor lifted the EFL Trophy twice at Wembley, etching another legacy.

With 234 senior appearances across the Premier League, Championship, and League One, Steer announced his retirement, eyeing a media pivot after co-hosting Posh’s podcast.

Speaking on his X account, Steer said:

“It’s time to hang up the gloves🧤”

“It’s been a blast 💥Three Wembley final wins, promotion to the Premier League and both Achilles ruptured!”

“Thank you to the fans and everyone who’s been part of the journey! I have memories that will live with me forever.”

Thank you ⚽️❤️

The Last Season

In his last professional year, Jed Steer was pivotal for Peterborough, starting 25 League One matches, playing 2,250 minutes, and achieving 4 clean sheets. Heroics included saving two penalties in the EFL Trophy semi-final vs Wrexham, securing a 2-0 Wembley final win over Birmingham for back-to-back titles. Despite Posh finishing 18th, his leadership steadied the squad.

His contract mutually ended in May for personal reasons, which ended his professional career.

Steer now looks to be pivoting to media and coaching. He’s already dipped into broadcasting, co-hosting Peterborough’s podcast and contributing to Villa TV since leaving Villa Park in 2023.

With his sharp football insight and natural charisma, punditry roles will beckon across the EFL.  Meanwhile, Steer’s pursuing UEFA coaching badges, hinting at a future on the touchline, perhaps mentoring young keepers.

Fans and peers, including Ben Foster, have hailed his grit, with his likely next stop looking to be within coaching or the media.
