Norwich City boss Liam Manning has reprimanded Shane Duffy following a social media incident in which the player insulted a supporter on X.
The 33-year-old centre-back reacted angrily to criticism aimed at the manager after the Canaries’ 1-0 defeat to Derby County, a result that left them in the Championship relegation zone.
Duffy Reacts After Pride Park Debacle
Following Tuesday night’s loss at Pride Park, Duffy responded to a supporter questioning why Manning remained in charge, using a derogatory term in his reply. The post quickly drew attention from fans and media, prompting an apology from the player the following day.
It’s been a tough period, and seeing the criticism towards the team has been hard. We have to accept the criticism right now. Everyone here cares a lot about performing well, and sometimes emotions get the better of you when things aren’t going as planned. (1/2)

Speaking to BBC Radio Norfolk, Manning confirmed that the matter had been handled internally, saying:
“The positions we are in and the responsibility we hold – irrespective of our opinions and what we think – you can’t come out and say that.”
The club’s seventh defeat in 11 matches has heightened frustration among supporters, who have voiced concern over both results and performances.
Duffy’s comments added further tension to an already difficult atmosphere as Norwich attempt to steer clear of the bottom 3.

Shane Duffy Apologises
Duffy issued a public apology on Wednesday morning, describing his post as a moment of “frustration” rather than disrespect.
He wrote that criticism of the team had been “hard to see” but accepted that it was part of football, adding that he valued the supporters’ passion and commitment to the club.
His message read:
“Everyone here cares a lot about performing well, and sometimes emotions get the better of you when things aren’t going as planned. My comment came out of frustration, not a lack of respect for the supporters — we really do value your passion and backing.”

Manning’s decision to address the matter publicly highlights his determination to maintain professionalism and unity within a struggling squad. The Norwich boss has faced mounting pressure amid a run of poor results, and Duffy’s apology is seen as an attempt to draw a line under the episode.
Duffy, who joined Norwich in 2023, has been one of the side’s most experienced players this season but remains under scrutiny after several off-field controversies, including a driving ban imposed in 2024.
The incident underscores the growing tension at Carrow Road, where supporters have demanded improvement following a disappointing start to the campaign.
Norwich return to action this weekend needing both a result and a calmer mood, as Manning and his squad attempt to refocus on the task of Championship survival.
