Derby County Target Free Agent Winger

Derby County are keeping tabs on Rhian Brewster as the former Champions League winner is on the search for a new club.

The forward left Sheffield United this summer after a tough time at Bramall Lane, blighted by injuries since joining in 2021. However, last season saw him involved heavily for Chris Wilder’s side as they pushed for promotion, with 42 appearances to his name and played over an hour at Wembley as the Blades fell to Sunderland.

Rams Interest Reignites

According to BBC Radio Derby’s Dominic Dietrich, John Eustace’s side are still interested in Brewster as the Championship season approaches, with their opening fixture now ten days away as they visit Stoke City. County have revamped their front line across the summer, recruiting Andreas Weimann from Eustace’s former side in Blackburn Rovers, as well as paying big fees for Luton Town‘s Carlton Morris and Patrick Agyemang from MLS side Charlotte FC.

Reports from earlier in the window from EFL Analysis had suggested that Championship rivals Middlesbrough could move for the former Swansea City loanee, but no news has emerged since about Rob Edwards’ side’s interest. Both Boro and Burnley were named by Graeme Bailey as potential destinations for Brewster, who still could have continued on at Sheffield United with a contract offer on the table.

Ruben Selles has since moved on to sign other attacking talent, with Louie Barry making a loan switch from Aston Villa and a permanent transfer for Botev Plovdiv’s Ehije Ukaki. Whilst some exits are expected in Kieffer Moore amid links to Wrexham and PSV’s interest in Gus Hamer, there is still plenty of depth in the squad for the former Reading boss to choose from.

Writers’ View

A move for Rhian Brewster is intriguing for Derby County to make. Of course, there are injury concerns surrounding him, but after a very solid campaign with few absences, he seems to have finally got over the worst of those setbacks. His versatility could come in handy for John Eustace as cover for new strikers Carlton Morris and Patrick Agyemang, whilst also being able to sit in comfortably at right wing as he did under Chris Wilder. While wage concerns could come into play, a free transfer move for a very talented player will be great business in County’s aim to climb the Championship table.
