Millwall are in talks to sign Luton Town full-back Alfie Doughty in a move that could see them beat Championship rivals Middlesbrough to one of Rob Edwards’ top transfer targets.
The 25-year-old is a key target for both clubs this summer, but it is the Lions who have reportedly stolen a march in negotiations.
Millwall Push Ahead in Alfie Doughty Chase
Reports emerging over the weekend suggest that Alex Neil’s side are working hard to secure a deal for the Luton Town defender, who is available following the Hatters’ relegation to League One. Doughty had been strongly linked with a reunion with former boss Rob Edwards at Middlesbrough, but it is now Millwall who appear to be in pole position.

Doughty made 37 Premier League appearances for Luton last term, contributing ten goal involvements in a difficult campaign. He was previously a regular under Edwards in their promotion-winning season and was widely tipped to follow the manager to Teesside. However, with Millwall now firmly in the picture, the move is no longer a foregone conclusion.
The Lions have already pulled off several eye-catching deals this summer, including the record-breaking arrival of Josh Coburn from Middlesbrough. Adding Doughty to their ranks would further strengthen a side that narrowly missed out on the play-offs last season and are aiming to go one better in 2025/26.
Doughty’s statistics show why both clubs are keen. He created 62 chances last season, completed 95 successful crosses and made 134 recoveries. His ability to operate as a wing-back or a wide midfielder gives Neil tactical flexibility, something he has already prioritised in his summer business.
While Middlesbrough continue to pursue the deal, there is now growing belief at The Den that Millwall could get it over the line first. With just under a fortnight remaining until the new campaign begins, the pressure is building on all parties to reach a resolution.

Writer’s View
Millwall’s interest in Alfie Doughty is another clear statement of intent. After missing the play-offs last season by fine margins, Alex Neil knows his side must be more ruthless in both boxes, and Doughty would help achieve that. His creativity, energy and top-flight experience make him a rare find at Championship level.
Beating Middlesbrough to the deal would not only strengthen Millwall but also deny a direct rival a proven asset. With the squad already shaping up well, this could be the piece that lifts the Lions into serious top-six contention.
