Stevenage are leading the chase for Everton goalkeeper Harry Tyrer as they seek a replacement for Murphy Cooper ahead of the new League One campaign.
With Cooper joining Barnsley earlier this summer, Alex Revell is keen to bring in a new number one and Tyrer has emerged as a prime target.

Stevenage Step Up Search for New First-Choice Keeper
Tyrer, 23, has been made available by Everton after falling further down the pecking order at Goodison Park. The arrival of Mark Travers on loan from Bournemouth has pushed the academy graduate closer to the exit door, and reports now suggest a move to League One is imminent.
Stevenage, who finished 13th in the third tier last season, are targeting a strong start to the 2025/26 campaign and see Tyrer as a key piece of their defensive rebuild. The former Chesterfield loanee has enjoyed three successful loan spells, including last season’s stint with Blackpool, where he kept 13 clean sheets in 42 appearances.
His earlier experiences include helping Chester reach the play-offs in National League North with 18 shutouts, followed by a title-winning season with Chesterfield in the National League. That record of consistent clean sheet numbers has made him an appealing option for Bowyer, who is looking to bring stability to Stevenage’s back line.
Although Everton would prefer a permanent transfer, Stevenage are understood to be pursuing a loan arrangement. Whether a compromise can be reached remains to be seen, but the player’s contract expiring in 2026 gives the Premier League side some leverage.
Burton Albion are also interested, but Stevenage appear to be in pole position. The Brewers narrowly avoided relegation last season and are undergoing a wider squad rebuild under Gary Bowyer, but sources suggest the lure of being a likely starter at Stevenage gives them the edge.
Blackpool were thought to be keen on bringing Tyrer back to Bloomfield Road but opted instead to bring in Bailey Peacock-Farrell on loan from Birmingham City, ending their interest.
Tyrer averaged 2.5 saves per game in League One last season, ranking 12th among regular keepers. While still developing, his frame, shot-stopping ability and commanding presence make him one of the most sought-after young goalkeepers currently available to clubs outside the top two divisions.

Writer’s View
This would be a sensible move for all parties. Stevenage urgently need a first-choice keeper and Harry Tyrer ticks the right boxes: age, experience, potential, and the hunger to prove himself. With Murphy Cooper gone, Bowyer needs someone reliable between the posts and Tyrer’s record across his three loans shows he is capable of handling pressure.
The move to Blackpool last year gave him League One experience, and though not perfect, it was valuable. If Stevenage can close this deal quickly, it could prove one of their most important signings of the summer.
