Reading FC have been told it will take a seven-figure bid to prise striker Ronan Hale away from Ross County this summer.
With the League One season fast approaching, the Royals remain light on attacking options as Noel Hunt eyes urgent reinforcements.
Reading Ponder Hale Swoop Amid Knibbs Exit
Reading’s need for a proven forward has intensified with Harvey Knibbs set to join Charlton Athletic. The only recognised striker currently on the books is 20-year-old Mark O’Mahony, on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, while Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan is also being considered as a central option.
That shortage has led them to target 26-year-old Northern Ireland international Ronan Hale, who netted 18 goals in all competitions for Ross County last season. Despite his individual efforts, County were relegated from the Scottish Premiership following defeat in the play-off final.
Chairman Roy MacGregor made clear to the Ross-Shire Journal that the forward would not come cheap, stating:
“Nobody will get pinched. If someone comes in and offers us £1million for Ronan Hale, we’ll have to consider it, but they will have to push the boat.”
Hale joined Ross County from Cliftonville last summer and still has two years remaining on his contract. The Scottish side paid an undisclosed fee at the time and are now determined to recoup significant value should they lose their top scorer.
The Belfast-born striker has had a nomadic career, starting at Birmingham City before loan spells at Derry City and a return to the Irish league. After impressing at Larne and Cliftonville, he made his senior debut for Northern Ireland in June 2025, having switched allegiance from the Republic.
Reading have yet to spend a fee on any summer arrival, making a move for Hale a potential statement of intent if they are willing to break that mould.

Writer’s View
Reading’s pursuit of Ronan Hale is both logical and ambitious. His proven track record across multiple leagues, coupled with international recognition, makes him a standout target. But in a window where the Royals have been frugal, it’s unclear if they’re willing or able to meet Ross County’s valuation.
With Knibbs set to depart and Hunt relying on youth and makeshift options, the urgency is clear. Hale would bring experience, energy, and an eye for goal—but unless Reading are prepared to ‘push the boat,’ this deal may remain out of reach.
