Are These The Best 5 Sheffield Wednesday Players of All Time?

1- David Hirst

358 appearances, 149 goals

“It’s where I’m gonna go when I’m down. When I’m down, and I’m dying of thirst. I’m gonna go on the p155 with David Hirst”

Something about the former number nine makes him almost immortal in the eyes of Wednesday supporters. He loved a goal, and God seemingly blessed his left foot with both power and precision. Between 1986 and 1992, he thrilled supporters as The Owls became established in the First Division, but the Premier League era was not kind to the Barnsley boy. He suffered a broken ankle which led to two injury-hit years where he played just 25 games and scored five goals – despite this, he earned three England caps, scoring once against Australia. In 1996, he held the record for the fastest-recorded shot, hitting the bar at 114 mph against Arsenal at Highbury (a record surpassed by Arjen Robben). Eventually, Southampton paid £2m for his services, but the injuries never truly eased up.
