Mel Sterland was a local boy made good, featuring in the team that earned top-flight status in 1984 after 15 years of absence. The full-back earned an England cap whilst wearing the blue and white, and had his best season in 1985/86, scoring eight goals as the Owls finished fifth. He left just before the success of the early nineties, moving to Rangers, but later returning to Leeds, where he was a title winner.
