Four free agents Swindon Town boss could be looking at to solve his defensive crisis

Swindon Town suffered an injury blow in their 2-0 home defeat to fellow League Two promotion hopefuls Newport County at the weekend when club captain and defensive lynchpin Dion Conroy sustained what could be a long term knee injury.

Conroy came off worse in a strong 50/50 challenge with Newport striker Joss Labadie which saw him helped from the field after only a couple of minutes of the match. It left Swindon boss short of cover for the vital position of centre-back, and with the transfer window now closed, it means his options are limited.

Speaking to the Gazette and Herald after the match, a clearly disappointed Richie Wellens indicated he might have to scour the free-agent market to find a replacement for his crucial defender. He said: ‘It’s obvious now that we need a centre back, and we’ll try to do something.’

‘It’s about the free agents market, but they’re not always easy to deal with.’

‘They think they’re in a strong position because they can demand more money. But they’re not really in a strong position because they’ve got no club and aren’t fit.’

With this in mind, we took a look at the list of central defenders currently without a club and have come up with four possible targets that Wellens might want to consider.
