Gillingham were the latest club to fall victim of Oxford United’s improved form at the weekend, going down 3-0 at the Kassam Stadium.
It was a limp, lacklustre display from the Gills which saw them three goals behind at half-time. Some tactical changes at the break saw them stem the tide in the second forty-five minutes, but it was a display that left the 483 travelling fans bitterly disappointed.
In truth, Gillingham were never in the game, and after only two victories in their opening ten games of the campaign, they now sit a disappointing sixteenth in the League One table.
Controversial manager Steve Evans is never one to hold back in his post-match comments, and he took the opportunity to apologise to the Gills supporters who made the arduous cross country journey to witness the defeat.
His attempt at conciliation broke no ice with many Gills supporters who are starting to turn on the Scot after a poor start to the campaign. Evans was not a popular choice when appointed in the summer, but many fans were ready to give him the benefit of the doubt if he could get results. However, after an offensive showing like Saturday’s, some Gills fans already feel it is time for chairman Paul Scally to make a change.
Judging by some comments on social media, the pressure on Evans is mounting, with patience wearing thin.
Here is a selection of responses to Evans apology on Twitter.
