Rochdale’s promising youngster Luke Matheson has been on the radar of Premier League giants Newcastle United for some time as reported by the Chronicle.
The sixteen-year-old hit the national media headlines after his equaliser at Old Trafford last week took Rochdale’s third-round Carabao Cup tie with Manchester United to penalties and although his team were beaten in the shoot-out, Matheson’s story of returning to school the day after his cup heroics stole all the limelight.
However, according to the report, the Toon have been monitoring his progress ever since he made his first-team breakthrough for Dale in 2018.
The teenage defender has already clocked up fourteen senior appearances for Rochdale, and according to the report Newcastle have been scouting him for some time and will not be surprised at his performance at Old Trafford.
However, the story does not mention whether or not the Magpies will make a move for the prodigy in January.
Our View
Probably a nonsense report but even so, our advice to the youngster is, stay at Rochdale for as long as you can, learn your trade and take your time, keep up the schooling and enjoy your football.
If Matheson is good enough, he will get his move, but one high profile goal at Old Trafford doesn’t mean you have made it; ask Frederico Macheda.
