League One’s weekend starts with Wigan Athletic travelling to Rotherham United as both teams look to get more points on the board in the early stages of the season.
Our Three Predictions For Rotherham United vs Wigan Athletic
- Prediction 1 – Christian Saydee To Score – 16/5
- Prediction 2 – Over 2.5 Goals Scored – 6/5
- Prediction 3 – Wigan Athletic To Win – 5/4
First Prediction For Rotherham United vs Wigan Athletic – Christian Saydee To Score – 16/5
A surprise rest for Christian Saydee in midweek against Luton Town means that the former Portsmouth man is likely to play a full game against Rotherham. Despite playing the final fifteen minutes at Kenilworth Road, he will be fresh for this upcoming game and with Paul Mullin not at his best being handed his first league start of the season, Saydee should be given the nod at the New York Stadium. The 23-year-old is top of the club charts for shots this season, tied with striking partner Dara Costelloe, and with Rotherham’s defence not looking up to scratch after a poor showing against Cardiff City, Saydee may be given ample opportunity to increase his tally for the season.
Second Prediction For Rotherham United vs Wigan Athletic – Over 2.5 Goals Scored – 6/5
Neither side have looked too convincing in their performances so far this season, with Wigan faring slightly better under the new management of Ryan Lowe. Whilst certainly they have had good results against Northampton Town and Peterborough United, they looked well off of the pace against opponents expected to compete at the top of the league like Luton or Leyton Orient. Rotherham, meanwhile, have lost to both Stevenage and Cardiff City this season, both of who currently occupy the automatic promotion places. Against each other with somewhat open defences, goals could be a regular occurrence this time around, a marked contrast to their recent confrontations.
Third Prediction For Rotherham United vs Wigan Athletic – Wigan Athletic To Win – 5/4
The Latics have looked strong against the lower-half sides of League One this season and this is another great opportunity to keep on pace with other playoff-chasing sides. It is a fixture that the Lancashire side have dominated in recent history, and with Ryan Lowe looking fairly successful so far they can continue that upwards trajectory. Whilst Rotherham do have an advantage in having not played since last week, the Millers have only scored twice so far in the third tier this season, both coming in their opening game against Port Vale. Wigan had a strong but fruitless performance against Luton and will be eager to redeem themselves in this match, and should be the favourites in this match.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head
Rotherham United have a unique advantage heading into this game, being the only League One team to head into their match having not played in midweek, due to their scheduled opponents, Burton Albion, instead competing in their EFL Cup First Round match against Tranmere Rovers. That means that they have a game in hand on every team except the Brewers, only playing four matches total in their season. Their only win of the season came on the opening day, with Sam Nombe scoring a brace to help the ten-man Millers defeat newly promoted Port Vale. They have lost their next two league games in Stevenage and Cardiff City, but did advance in the cup by beating Salford City on penalties to line up a South Yorkshire derby against Barnsley. Their last game was against Cardiff, who trounced them 3-0 in South Wales, with United being limited to just one singular shot across the whole match. The game could see the debut of loanee Martin Sherif, who was signed from Everton following the news of Sam Nombe’s injury being long-term.
Wigan Athletic were handed their second loss of the season in midweek with a narrow 1-0 loss to Luton Town. Despite a solid effort to get back into the match following a George Saville goal in the opening ten minutes, Ryan Lowe’s side were unable to break down Josh Keeley’s goal, knocking the Latics down to 13th ahead of the weekend’s action. Prior to their trip to Bedfordshire, Athletic beat Peterborough United and Notts County in both League and Cup, keeping clean sheets in both. Their opening game of the season was the only time one of their matches has exceeded the over 2.5 goals metric, beating Northampton Town 3-1 at the Brick Community Stadium.
With both sides being regulars in both the Championship and League One over recent years, there have been plenty of recent games between these sides. It has been the away side that have dominated these fixtures, with eight wins to Rotherham’s three since 2014 and the honours were even four times. Wigan also hold a strong unbeaten streak against the Millers and head into this game having not lost the last eight games against the Yorkshire side. Rotherham’s last triumph came in 2018 during the EFL Cup first round with a 3-1 home win. Last season’s games both ended 1-0 in the Latics’ favour, with James Carragher scoring the only goal in their most recent game.
Oliver Langford will officiate this match, his first League One match of the campaign and his fourth of the season. His most recent game was Birmingham City‘s dramatic victory over Blackburn Rovers, in which he awarded a penalty to the Blues late on. He has handed out eight yellow cards and one red card this season, dismissing Sam Inwood during Bolton Wanderers‘ EFL Cup game against Sheffield Wednesday.
