Newport County vs MK Dons: Prediction, Lineups & Odds (23/08)

MK Dons make the trip over the border to face Welsh outfit Newport County in an early kick-off at Rodney Parade on Saturday in front of the Sky Sports + cameras.

Our Three Predictions for Newport County vs MK Dons

  • First Prediction: MK Dons to win – 29/50
  • Second Prediction: Both sides to score – no – 4/5
  • Third Prediction: Callum Paterson to score at any time – 37/20

First Prediction for Newport County vs MK Dons – MK Dons to win – 29/50

Although Crawley Town managed to hold them to a draw mid-week, the away side are clear favourites in this matchup with Newport County. Unbeaten in the league so far, with one of the best squads and one of the highest budgets, it’s clear to see why Paul Warne’s side are one of the favourites for promotion to League One this season. If they are serious about promotion, they need to win games like these, especially with the form their opposition are currently in, suffering three losses on the spin. Although David Hughes’ side won on the opening day against Crawley, they’ve not won since, suffering a defeat in the cup to Millwall, before losing in the league to both Grimsby Town and Salford City. The Dons, on the other hand, beat Barrow on the opening day, thrashed Cheltenham Town last weekend, and gained a point at Crawley midweek. On the balance of play at the moment, MK Dons look the favourites to win this clash at Rodney Parade on Saturday.

Second Prediction for Newport County vs MK Dons – Both sides to score – no – 4/5

One other thing the away side have proved they can do more than the home side is find the back of the net. Other than the Carabao Cup clash with Bristol City, Warne’s side have scored in every game so far, whilst also keeping a respectable defensive record in the process. In three fourth-tier games this season, eight goals have been scored by the away side, including five goals in a 5-0 win over Cheltenham last Saturday. Defensively, they have only conceded once in the league and three times overall this season, two of which came against Championship opposition, whilst also keeping two out of three clean sheets in League Two. The hosts, on the other hand, have scored just three goals in the last four games, two of which came on opening day at the beginning of the month. In all competitions, defensively, they’ve shipped five goals, four of which have come in the opening four league matches. This isn’t a bad record, but when you are coming up against the side with the biggest budget and the best players in the league, you need to be strong in defence. The stats from previous games suggest that MK Dons are in a better goalscoring and defensive position than their opponents, who may struggle to find the back of the net in this clash.

Third Prediction for Newport County vs MK Dons – Callum Paterson to score at any time – 37/20

Callum Paterson joined the club after he departed Sheffield Wednesday, where he scored 31 goals in over 150 appearances at Hillsborough. The experienced striker has already made a mark at Stadium MK, scoring two goals in the four league games he’s played in so far. This makes him the top scorer at the club and the joint-second top scorer in the league at this point in the season. He’ll be hoping he can further his tally and help his side further against Newport at Rodney Parade at lunchtime on Saturday.

Full Preview of the Game – Last Results and Head-To-Head

As mentioned above, both sides come into this on differing form, the hosts winning just one of their opening three league fixtures whilst the away side are unbeaten so far. Newport beat Crawley on the opening day, but have not won since, whilst Warne’s side registered back-to-back wins against Barrow and Cheltenham, before rescuing a point away at Crawley midweek.

Both sides will be looking to improve on last season, but in completely different aspects. Newport will be hoping to improve on their 22nd-placed finish, whilst MK Dons will be fighting for promotion to the third tier.

Since 2016, these sides have met nine times, in both League Two, the Carabao Cup and the EFL Trophy. MK Dons generally get the better of these opponents, winning five of the nine ties, whilst their opponents have only won two. The other two games have ended level at full-time, with the last encounter between these sides ending goalless and level at Stadium MK at full-time.
