Blackburn Rovers captain Lewis Travis has asked to leave the club following interest from Championship rivals Derby County.
The midfielder is keen on a reunion with Rams boss John Eustace, but the clubs remain far apart on a transfer fee.
Rovers rejected an offer in the region of £1.5 million, which falls well short of their valuation. With just 12 months left on his contract, head coach Valérien Ismaël has admitted the situation is one the club must manage carefully, particularly given the importance of the skipper to his side.
Transfer Request Confirmed
Speaking after Blackburn’s 2–1 Carabao Cup defeat to Bradford City, Ismaël confirmed Travis had formally requested a move.
“He has asked to leave the club. We say that if the price is right for the club, then we will see. But at the minute, it’s not the case. When a player is out of contract or has one year left on his contract, he looks after himself. It’s not only about Travis, it’s about the football world. He is focused on himself, which is understandable, but we are doing the same as a club.”
Travis has been a mainstay at Ewood Park in recent seasons, but Rovers’ efforts to secure a new long-term deal have not been successful. Ismaël revealed that the club had made substantial offers to both Travis and Callum Brittain, yet competition from elsewhere has proved difficult to overcome.
“It’s hectic, but I can understand when you get a massive offer like he received. The last couple of years, we missed the chance to extend the contract earlier, especially for a key player like that. Now we were trying to change the situation, to resolve the situation, but it was not possible anymore.”

Uncertain Future
With Derby’s approach rebuffed and Blackburn holding firm on their valuation, the next week will be pivotal in determining whether Travis remains at Ewood Park. Ismaël has not ruled out selecting him while the situation develops, but acknowledged the uncertainty could affect his availability.
Eustace, who took charge of Derby earlier this year, is understood to be a driving force behind the Rams’ interest. His previous working relationship with Travis appears to be a major factor in the midfielder’s desire to move.
Writer’s View
This is a significant moment for Blackburn, who face the prospect of losing both their captain and an influential midfield presence. Travis’s leadership and consistency have been integral to Rovers’ recent campaigns, and replacing him would be a major challenge so close to the transfer deadline.
From Derby’s perspective, his energy and Championship experience would be a huge boost as they look to build on their return to the second tier. With the fee still a sticking point, the coming days will reveal whether Blackburn’s resolve holds or if Derby’s interest turns into an offer too good to refuse.
