Northampton Town suffered more frustration as Lincoln City claimed a 1-0 win at Sixfields despite heavy second-half pressure.
Kevin Nolan’s side remain without a victory this season after Freddie Draper’s early strike proved decisive.
Cobblers Rue Missed Opportunities
The Imps took the lead in the 20th minute when Draper connected sweetly with a volley to give the visitors the advantage. From that point onwards, however, it was the hosts who dictated the game.
Northampton created a string of chances, with Tyrese Fornah, Cameron McGeehan, Conor McCarthy and Elliott List all spurning opportunities. Despite sustained territorial dominance, they could not find a way past a resolute Lincoln defence marshalled superbly by goalkeeper George Wickens and his back line.
Nolan, who took charge last season, was adamant his Cobblers side had done enough to win but was left to reflect on their shortcomings in front of goal.
“The thing is we haven’t scored a goal but we should have,” he said. “We need to be more ruthless. We gave them a few moments in the first half but the opportunities were there and I thought we were by far the better team throughout the game, especially in the second half.
“The lads grew in confidence but we just couldn’t put the ball in the net.”

Lincoln Stand Firm
While Lincoln had their moments in the first period, the second half became an exercise in determined defending. Blocks, interceptions and timely clearances frustrated Northampton’s attempts to equalise, with Draper’s clinical finish ultimately enough to separate the sides.
Nolan was pleased with a lot of things, not that his touchline demeanour would have suggested as much.
“I’m very pleased with a lot of it but I’m not happy about losing, especially at home. But I think they will go home feeling they have got away with one tonight and if they don’t, I’d be very surprised, but fair play, they stood up to it and made blocks. For all the positives I saw, it doesn’t matter if you don’t put the ball in the net.”
Pressure on the Hosts
For Northampton, the defeat leaves them winless in League One and searching for answers. Supporters saw plenty of endeavour, but with no goals scored at Sixfields this season, the lack of cutting edge is becoming a pressing concern. With games coming thick and fast, Nolan will be eager to translate improved performances into points before early frustration grows into deeper unease.
Writer’s View
Northampton will feel hard done by after a game in which they dominated large periods, but the reality is that ruthless finishing separates contenders from strugglers. Nolan is correct that his side produced positive football, yet wastefulness in front of goal cost them dearly.
Lincoln showed the value of defensive organisation and taking chances when they arrive, qualities that continue to keep them competitive in League One. Unless the Cobblers can quickly add goals to their play, their promising passages of football will continue to yield little reward.
