Major Update Issued In Surprise Birmingham City Transfer Link

A potential move from Birmingham City for Aleksandar Mitrovic has been quashed in a new update on the rumours surrounding the Serbian striker.

Blues were linked with an audacious move for the former Fulham striker and two-time Championship Golden Boot winner, with TalkSPORT’s transfer correspondent Alex Crook reporting that Chris Davies’ side were linked with the Serbian international. The 30-year-old, who is currently injured, has been playing for Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal since 2023, but now faces competition in the number nine role from new signing Darwin Nunez.

Rumours Quashed

However, in a new update from BirminghamLive, any potential move has been promptly dismissed as they report that Birmingham have no intention of signing Mitrovic this window. Mitrovic, who is the current record holder for goals in a Championship season with 43, has also been a target for Leeds United as they look for new striking options in the Premier League.

The Whites, who retained Joel Piroe heading into the top flight, have also recruited Dominic Calvert-Lewin and are looking for a third option to replace the outgoings of Mateo Joseph and Patrick Bamford, who still remains at the club amid links to Middlesbrough, who have no interest in signing him, according to EFL Analysis.

Blues already have five senior striking options at St. Andrew’s this season, with Jay Stansfield being joined by new summer signing Kyogo Furuhashi as the starting pair for the club in the League, complemented by Lyndon Dykes, Marvin Ducksch and Tyler Roberts, the latter of which has been linked with a move away as far back as March.

The report from BirminghamLive suggests that wages are a big factor in why a move for Mitrovic is not possible, with reports stating he is earning as much as £400,000 per week in the Middle East, even if the Serbian is willing to take a pay cut.

Writers’ View

It was a very strenuous link for Birmingham City to sign Aleksandar Mitrovic and it has very quickly been shut down. With investment already made in the striker department for Marvin Ducksch and Kyogo Furuhashi with the outgoing of Alfie May to Huddersfield Town, a move for Mitrovic would not make much sense with the quality already in the front line. Other areas need to be prioritised, particularly in defence after the sale of Kristian Bielik to West Bromwich Albion. The Blues’ attack has done well so far in three difficult fixtures and will likely step up to show their prowess next weekend as they face Oxford United.
