Salford City Make Move For Former Loanee

Salford City look set to re-sign Matty Young on a second loan move as Karl Robinson’s side gear up for another League Two season.

After a fraught start to his first-ever EFL loan, which saw rumours of a premature recall back to parent club Sunderland, Young made the step up to be the Ammies’ first-choice option ahead of Jamie Jones. Salford narrowly missed out on playoff football by one point last season, and look geared up for another promotion push.

Second Goalkeeper Link In As Many Days

According to Alan Nixon via his Patreon page, Young could return to Moor Lane this season after Sunderland have seemingly sanctioned a second loan spell in League Two for the 18-year-old. It is the second goalkeeper link that Salford have seen in the past few days, with Jordan Archer of Portsmouth also touted for a move to Greater Manchester.

Salford have not had any senior goalkeepers contracted to the side since the initial departure of Young and the release of Jones following his contract expiration. They have been using trialist goalkeepers for their opening salvo of pre-season games, with former Blackpool man Mackenzie Chapman playing in goal for a recent game against non-league side Warrington Rylands.

Young had a great impact during his time at Salford, with eight clean sheets to his name in 20 appearances and conceded 18 times, helping the club charge towards, but ultimately fall short of a top seven finish following disappointing results to both relegated sides in Carlisle United and Morecambe in their final three games.

Karl Robinson had previously spoken of his desire to bring Young back to the North West for a second spell at the club in January as he began his stint as first-choice goalkeeper.

Writers’ View

Both parties seem to be happy with what Matty Young provided in the latter half of last season so a reunification of player and loan club makes perfect sense. It is an environment the 18-year-old knows well and played excellently in, with a highly reputable manager in Karl Robinson. Salford City will once again be in and around the playoff conversation this season and will hope to push over the line again and now with experience under his belt, the Black Cats loanee will have a starring role to play. With Jordan Archer as an experienced backup, should that deal also go through, the Ammies will have built a very strong goalkeeping unit within the space of 48 hours.
