Bristol City Sanction Exit For 26-Year-Old

Bristol City are set to move on from midfielder Marcus McGuane just a year on from signing him, with a League One club closing in on his signature.

The Robins signed the former Barcelona player from Oxford United after propelling the U’s to the Championship through the playoffs. Liam Manning used the 26-year-old 24 times across the season, playing a rotational role in a squad that reached the playoffs for the first time in 17 years.

Town Set To Swoop

According to reports from Bristol Live’s Dan Carter on social media, Huddersfield Town are closing in on a permanent move for McGuane, bolstering Lee Grant’s squad as they look heavy favourites for promotion in League One.

The Terriers have spent much of the summer in pursuit of a new midfielder, with a long-publicised chase of Leyton Orient‘s Ethan Galbraith, battling both Charlton Athletic and Swansea City for his signature. Ultimately, it was The Jacks who won that chase, prompting other options to be explored by Huddersfield, including a bid for George Thomason and interest in both Marc Leonard and Luca Connell from Barnsley.

Under Kevin Nagle’s watch this summer the West Yorkshire club have already built a new defence and attack, now spearheaded by Alfie May, but have been quieter in the middle of the pitch since their free agent signing of Preston North End‘s Ryan Ledson. Bristol City, meanwhile, have only done two bits of business, signing Emil Riis from Deepdale as well as defensive midfielder Adam Randell from Plymouth Argyle.

This is the best move for all parties involved as Marcus McGuane did not seem to thrive at Bristol City. Whilst a very crucial rotation option in the squad, he never showed he could permanently displace Jason Knight or Max Bird in the starting eleven. A move back to League One, an environment he succeeded in with Oxford United is a good step and joining Huddersfield, the out and out favourites for the League One title at this stage is a very good transfer to make. Of course, the competition for game time is immense so he will need to prove himself to Lee Grant that he can perform consistently above players like David Kasumu and Herbie Kane.
