Alfie May believes there are similarities between the squad that manager Lee Grant is building at Huddersfield Town and the Birmingham City one which stormed League One last season.
The 32-year-old was confirmed as the latest addition at the Accu Stadium earlier today, joining from Birmingham on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee. The attacker only joined the Blues last summer after leaving Charlton Athletic just 12 months into his two-year contract.
He was targeted by the West Midlanders almost as soon as their relegation from the Championship was confirmed. Manager Chris Davies was determined to snap up some of the best talent in the third tier, a bill which May fits.
The former Cheltenham Town man proved to be a huge success at St Andrew’s. He scored 16 goals in 44 league outings as Birmingham stormed to the title with a record 111 points. However, despite racking up 248 appearances in League One, he has never played in the Championship, leading to his transfer to Huddersfield.
May Keen To Replicate Birmingham Success
Huddersfield look to be building an exciting squad ahead of the new campaign. May’s arrival is the 10th through the door this summer, with more expected in the coming weeks. Speaking upon the announcement, the striker compared his new team to the one he left behind:
“It’s no secret that this is a club that I’ve come close to joining in the past, and I’m really pleased the opportunity has come again to become a Town player.
“This is a huge club with massive ambition, and that’s all any player wants to feel a part of. I was in a team last season that felt similarly, so I know what’s possible when a squad clicks with a manager and there’s a positive feeling across the whole club, and that’s something I recognise here.
“My job is to work as hard as possible and score goals, and I’ll do everything in my power to repay the faith the club has shown in me. Lee Grant is an exciting manager and the way he wants to play and attack feels like the right fit for me, so I can’t wait to get going.”

Huddersfield have made some excellent signings this summer, but this is perhaps the pick of the bunch. The decision to hand him a three-year deal at 32 will be questioned by some, but he is a player than could prove to be the difference between success and failure. Birmingham took a punt last summer that he could be the man to fire them to promotion and alongside Jay Stansfield, he formed one half of the division’s most feared attack. Lee Grant does have to be careful though. He has made wholesale changes to his playing staff and they could take time to gel. A poor start to the season could see question marks appear.
