Shrewsbury Town In Pursuit Of Championship Defender

Shrewsbury Town are in pole position to sign Wrexham defender Will Boyle according to the Shropshire Star.

Salop were relegated from League One as the bottom-placed team in the division, ending a decade-long spell in the third tier for the New Meadow side. Michael Appleton has already begun planning for next season, with two early-window signings in Tom Anderson from Doncaster Rovers and Sam Clucas from Lincoln City, both on free transfers.

Boyle Linked With Shrewsbury

According to Ollie Westbury within the Shropshire Star, Town are now in the lead to sign Will Boyle from Wrexham after the former Huddersfield Town man has struggled for minutes at Salop’s cross-border rivals. The 29-year-old played just three times last season, all in cup competitions and has just 31 appearances since arriving at The Racecourse Ground two summers ago.

Boyle had previously been mooted with a move to Gillingham, managed by former Shrewsbury boss Gareth Ainsworth. The Kent side have been in the market for defenders over the summer, and were heavily linked with George Stanger following his release from Ayr United, but the New Zealand youth international instead opted to remain in Scotland and joined Kilmarnock.

The Shropshire side have been looking at other central defensive targets and were linked with Sam Stubbs following his release from Bradford City, although they may face competition from his former loan club in Cheltenham Town.

Writers’ View

Will Boyle is now in the prime years of his career and with his time at Wrexham yielding little in terms of regular football, a move away is the best course of action. He proved himself somewhat for The Red Dragons whilst in League Two and now could earn a place back in a starting eleven with Shrewsbury Town. After a disappointing season, Michael Appleton will hope to bring a side which spent 10 years in League One back up at the first time of asking. Town have done well so far to entice players to their project and Boyle can have a big part to play should he move to Shropshire.
