Gillingham boss Gareth Ainsworth has backed new signing Seb Palmer-Houlden to make a major impact at Priestfield, describing the former Bristol City striker as “relentless” and a perfect fit for his system.
Palmer-Houlden, 21, has completed a permanent move from the Championship outfit after two strong loan campaigns, first at Newport County and then with Dundee in the Scottish Premiership. He scored nine goals in each of those seasons and is now set to spearhead the Gills’ attacking line in League Two.
Ainsworth admitted he was not able to scout the player live before the deal was finalised but said the club’s recruitment team had done extensive background work, and he had full confidence in the forward’s potential.
“He’s going to bring an absolute relentless work-rate and a want to score goals,” Ainsworth said. “The Rainham End are going to love him because he just never stops running, never stops chasing.”
Palmer-Houlden had been on Gillingham’s radar before Ainsworth’s arrival, with the new manager giving the final green light once in post. The Gills’ recruitment team, led by Andy Hessenthaler and supported by analyst James Harrison and scout Ronnie Jepson, had identified the striker as a key target.
Ainsworth, who made it clear no signings would arrive without his personal approval, praised the structure already in place at the club. He sees Palmer-Houlden as an energetic, versatile striker who will fit in well alongside Elliott Nevitt, Joe Gbode, and returning forwards Josh Andrews and Marcus Wyllie.
Palmer-Houlden Career
The 6ft 2in frontman came through Bristol City’s youth ranks but saw his path to the first team blocked by more senior options. His decision to leave the Robins permanently is seen by Ainsworth as a positive step and one that shows the player’s hunger to carve out his own career.
“He’s very much my type of player and we think we’ve got him right at the right time. He’s going to have a good career and we’re excited to bring him here.”
While Ainsworth admitted he prefers to watch players live before signing them, he was satisfied with the video and statistical scouting work done in Palmer-Houlden’s case and is confident the forward will thrive in Gillingham’s high-intensity setup.

Writer’s View
Seb Palmer-Houlden looks a smart pick-up for Gillingham. At just 21, he’s already shown his worth in the EFL and in Scotland, and his relentless energy is exactly what Gareth Ainsworth demands from his front men. This feels like a move with both short-term impact and long-term potential, and if Palmer-Houlden hits the ground running, he could become a key figure in a promotion push.
His decision to leave Bristol City for regular football shows character, and he may well thrive as a big fish in a tighter League Two pond.
