‘Ain’t Got a Clue’ – Peterborough United Figure In Transfer Fee Admission

Peterborough United are set to receive a significantly reduced fee for striker Ricky-Jade Jones after the 22-year-old opted to join Bundesliga side St Pauli on a free transfer.

Jones, who has been with the club since the age of nine, allowed his contract to expire at the end of the 2024/25 season before completing a move to Germany. While the club remains entitled to compensation due to his age and development under EFL rules, the figure will now be determined by FIFA regulations rather than a domestic tribunal.

‘No Clue’ To Compensation

Director of football Barry Fry admitted to Mail Sport that he has “no clue” how much compensation the club will receive, expressing frustration at the uncertainty surrounding international development fees.

“We’ll get something from FIFA, but it wouldn’t be ideal for us. I’ve never been in that situation, so I don’t know whether it’ll be a pound or a million,” Fry said. “You know what I mean? I ain’t got a clue.”

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony had previously acknowledged that the move “stung,” with the club likely to receive far less than if Jones had signed for another English team. Compensation in those cases would typically be settled through a tribunal, where Peterborough would have been able to present their valuation and argue for a fee more reflective of Jones’ value.

Jones made over 100 senior appearances for the club after debuting as a teenager, becoming a regular feature in the squad across League One and the Championship. His pace and attacking threat had attracted attention from Premier League and EFL sides over the past two years, but no move materialised before his deal expired.

Poku In Similar Boat

Meanwhile, Peterborough also risk losing winger Kwame Poku in a similar fashion. Fry confirmed that the Ghana international has suitors across Europe and that the club would vastly prefer a move within England to protect their financial interests.

“We would definitely prefer Kwame to stay in England,” Fry added. “He has clubs from all over the place after him… I was asking clubs for £5 million and £5 million in add-ons when they were interested previously.”

Poku, formerly of Colchester United, has been a standout performer since arriving at London Road and is expected to make a decision on his future in the coming weeks.

Writer’s View

Peterborough United are facing the downside of modern player mobility, and Ricky-Jade Jones’ departure highlights the harsh reality clubs face when developing young talent. Losing a player of Jones’ calibre for a nominal FIFA compensation fee, despite investing over a decade in his growth, will hurt both financially and emotionally.

The situation around Kwame Poku compounds the issue—Posh must now walk a fine line between securing maximum value and supporting their players’ ambitions. It’s a scenario that raises bigger questions about the protection of EFL clubs in a global transfer market.
