Cheltenham Town Make Major Transfer Decision

Cheltenham Town have placed striker George Miller on the transfer list, despite the 26-year-old finishing as the club’s top scorer in the 2024/25 campaign.

Miller netted 11 goals for the Robins across all competitions last term, but Gloucestershire Live report that he is now free to find a new club as part of the squad rebuild at Whaddon Road. The news comes just a year after he arrived from Doncaster Rovers for an undisclosed fee, reuniting with manager Michael Flynn, who had previously coached him at Walsall.

He is currently midway through a two-year deal, meaning any move would require a fee unless his contract is terminated by mutual consent.

The striker’s CV includes stints with Walsall, Barnsley, Bury and Middlesbrough, alongside loan spells at Bradford City, Scunthorpe United, Wrexham and Cork City. Despite often being used as a support striker or wide forward earlier in his career, Miller became a focal point in Cheltenham’s attack last season.

Big Summer of Change For Cheltenham

His expected departure comes as part of a summer of change under Flynn, who has already overseen a reshuffle of the squad and backroom staff. Matty Taylor, Ibrahim Bakare, and Harrison Sohna were also placed on the transfer list in May, while centre-back Tom Bradbury has joined Harrogate Town and Ryan Haynes is set for a move to Brackley Town.

In contrast, midfielder Liam Kinsella has agreed a new one-year deal with an option for a further season, and goalkeeping player-coach Joe Day is expected to remain. Academy graduate Freddy Willcox has also committed his future to the club.

Miller’s potential exit could attract interest from clubs in both League One and League Two, given his proven ability to score goals at this level and his relatively young age. With a year remaining on his contract, Cheltenham may be hoping to cash in rather than risk losing him for nothing next summer.

Writer’s View

This is a surprising yet potentially strategic move from Cheltenham Town. George Miller’s contribution last season was substantial, and goal scorers are notoriously hard to replace on a limited budget. However, Michael Flynn clearly has a clear vision for reshaping his squad, and freeing up Miller’s wages could open the door to multiple new arrivals.

Much will depend on whether a club steps in with a suitable offer, but Cheltenham fans will undoubtedly be watching closely to see who replaces their leading marksman.
