AFC Wimbledon Confirm Deal For Former Loanee

AFC Wimbledon have signed a new wingback by making a move for former loanee Steve Seddon on a one-year deal.

The Dons earned promotion through the playoffs with a win over Walsall in the final at Wembley, but lost key star Josh Neufville to League One rivals Bradford City, meaning Johnnie Jackson’s side needed to find a new left-sided defender.

Seddon Makes Return

The club announced they had signed 27-year-old Seddon on a one-year deal, making it his third stint in South London. He had previously been playing for Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership, making 17 appearances last season.

After loan spells to the club from Birmingham City in both 2019 and 2020, Seddon played 37 times for the club, including in their League One relegation battle in his first season at Kingsmeadow, which they survived by the barest of margins against Plymouth Argyle.

Since his last spell at The Dons, he has played for a host of EFL clubs including Oxford United, Cambridge United and Burton Albion. Speaking to Wimbledon upon the announcement of his deal, Seddon said:

“I’m buzzing to be back, it’s a special club and I can’t wait to get started!

“I have such good memories from my other spells here that it felt like the perfect time to come back. I’m also looking forward to playing at Plough Lane in front of our fans.”

Writers’ View

With how outstanding Josh Neufville has been for AFC Wimbledon during his time at the club, it would have been very difficult to replace him. Steve Seddon is a great prospect to do so, with him playing a semi-regular role for a top-flight side like Motherwell. Whilst he may have never played at Plough Lane before, he is someone familiar with the club and the setup in South London, so will have little to do in terms of adapting to a new environment. It is some very shrewd business for the Dons as they look to retain their place in League One next season.
