Cambridge United have received a huge boost following the announcement that defender Liam Bennett has committed his future to the club after agreeing a new two-year deal.
The 23-year-old joined the U’s in 2021 from non-league AFC Sudbury. He was given his first taste of regular first team football the following year when he joined Walsall on a season-long deal. He made 25 appearances in all competitions for the Saddlers, but his time in the West Midlands was cut short when Cambridge recalled the right-back – who is also comfortable operating in midfield – early.
He has been an ever-present at the Abbey Stadium ever since, featuring 133 times. He was rewarded for his fine form during the 2023/24 campaign by winning the club’s Player of the Year.
Bennett Set To Stay Until 2027
Bennett’s previous deal was due to expire at the end of this month. Cambridge announced at the end of the season that they were in discussions with the player over an extension, which was confirmed earlier today. Speaking to official club media, the player said upon the announcement:
“I am delighted to be staying with the Club. Last year was frustrating for everyone, but it’s time to look forward now.
“I have been here long enough to know what Cambridge United is all about and it’s important that we get back to winning games of football.

“The Club means a lot to me and I want to be part of its next successful chapter. Under the leadership of Neil (Harris) and Bonz (Mark Bonner), I believe that this season can be an exciting one and a positive step towards getting this Club back to where it belongs.”

This is a huge boost for Cambridge who are gearing up for life in League Two. They suffered a dreadful campaign last time out, spending the entirety of the season in the relegation places. They will be looking to bounce back at the first opportunity and keeping players who have been on the books for so long will play a huge part in that. Despite his young age, Bennett is the club’s long-serving player and he will provide a bit of stability to Neil Harris’ squad.
