Wycombe Wanderers are leading the race to sign AFC Wimbledon midfielder James Tilley as they begin a major summer overhaul under manager Matt Bloomfield.
Tilley, who turns 27 this week, played a pivotal role in helping Wimbledon secure promotion via the League Two play-offs, featuring in 53 matches across all competitions during the 2024/25 campaign. He completed the full 90 minutes in the Dons’ 1-0 victory over Walsall at Wembley, capping off an impressive season at Plough Lane.
Interest Dates Back Years
Wycombe’s interest in the former Brighton & Hove Albion academy product dates back several years, with reported links as far back as 2019. Six years on, with Bloomfield overseeing a significant squad refresh at Adams Park, the Chairboys are now hopeful of finally landing their long-term target.
Tilley’s journey through the EFL has seen him accumulate over 100 appearances for Wimbledon since joining in 2023, following spells with Grimsby Town and Crawley Town. Originally a youth product at Brighton, he made three senior appearances and had loan stints at Cork City and Yeovil Town before leaving the Seagulls in January 2020.
Wimbledon are understood to be reluctant to lose the versatile midfielder, but Wycombe’s renewed interest comes at a time of change for both clubs. The Dons are preparing for life back in League One, while Wycombe are still to make a single addition in the summer transfer window after confirming 11 departures, including experienced names such as Sam Vokes, Kieran Sadlier and Brandon Hanlan.
Centre-back Joe Low has already signed for Huddersfield Town, while other high-profile exits—like Adam Reach and Beryly Lubala—leave Bloomfield with a significant rebuild on his hands.
Pre-season preparations are already under way at Adams Park, though all fixtures will be played away from home due to a new pitch being laid. Matches against Sutton United, Barnet and Cheltenham Town are scheduled before the new campaign begins on the weekend of August 2–3.

Writer’s View
James Tilley would be a smart addition for Wycombe—a technically gifted and hard-working midfielder who has proven he can thrive under pressure. His play-off experience and consistent output last season make him an attractive proposition for a team looking to bounce back after a turbulent 2024/25.
With Wycombe having let go of several key squad members, Tilley’s arrival could signal a new creative focal point in midfield. The move also fits Bloomfield’s strategy of injecting fresh energy and EFL nous into his squad. If Wycombe get this deal done early, it would be a strong statement of intent.
