Cardiff City are among several clubs interested in signing highly-rated Bristol Rovers midfielder Kamil Conteh this summer—but their ongoing managerial vacancy could complicate matters.
The 22-year-old has emerged as a hot commodity following Bristol Rovers’ relegation to League Two, and The Mirror reports that Cardiff, Derby County and Wycombe Wanderers are all monitoring the Sierra Leone international. Plymouth Argyle are also said to be tracking his availability.
One Season in Bristol
Conteh only joined the Gas in January 2024 but has quickly established himself as a standout performer. His performances have continued to catch the eye despite the club’s slide into the fourth tier, and with a release clause reportedly written into his contract—running until June 2027—interest from Championship and top-end League One sides was always likely.
However, Cardiff’s lack of a permanent manager places them at a disadvantage. The club parted ways with Erol Bulut after a turbulent 2024/25 campaign, and with the new season approaching, there’s still no clear favourite in the latest Cardiff City manager odds, meaning recruitment plans remain in flux. In contrast, Derby County, managed by John Eustace, are pressing ahead with summer targets and see Conteh as a key midfield addition.
Wycombe Wanderers are also believed to be serious contenders. They are undergoing a rebuild under Matt Bloomfield and are in need of proven EFL players to support a push up the League One table. But the biggest threat to Cardiff’s chances may well be Derby, who have the Championship platform and managerial stability Conteh is likely to favour.
The midfielder, capped nine times by Sierra Leone, has already enjoyed a varied career. He came through the academies at Crystal Palace, Watford, and Middlesbrough, with senior experience gained during a loan spell at Gateshead. A permanent switch to Grimsby Town in 2023 saw him make 29 appearances before his move to Bristol Rovers.
Despite their relegation, the Memorial Stadium side are not under immediate pressure to sell due to Conteh’s long-term deal. But should a club activate his clause, he is widely expected to move on. Bristol Rovers have recently appointed Darrell Clarke as their new manager after parting ways with Inigo Calderon.

Cardiff City’s interest in Kamil Conteh is no surprise—the midfielder has been one of League One’s standout performers since joining Bristol Rovers. But the lack of a permanent manager could prove a serious stumbling block.
In a competitive race involving Derby County, Wycombe Wanderers and Plymouth Argyle, it’s the Rams who hold the upper hand. With Eustace already mapping out summer targets, Cardiff must act fast or risk missing out on one of the best young midfielders outside the top two divisions.
