New Bradford City signing Stephen Humphrys believes his new club are a sleeping giant after opting to leave League One rivals Barnsley.
The Bantams finally brought to an end their six year stay in League Two last season when they finished third. Their promotion was secured in dramatic circumstances on the final day. It appeared as if they would be leapfrogged by Walsall, but a 96th minute winner over Fleetwood Town from Antoni Sarcevic sparked pandemonium at Valley Parade.
The third tier now awaits, with Graham Alexander’s side having already made waves in the transfer market. Two new signings were confirmed yesterday, bringing the number of new arrivals this summer to six.
Humphrys Excited To Join ‘Massive Club’
Humphrys joined Barnsley a year ago on an initial one-year deal. He hit nine goals in 37 league outings, prompting the Tykes to open discussions over a new deal at the end of the season.
The striker opted to make the move across Yorkshire, stating he wanted to be a part of the club since watching the unbelievable scenes that was sparked by their promotion. Speaking to official club media, the 27-year-old said:
“Bradford City is such a massive club. I consider it a sleeping giant really. I am delighted to get it done so early before pre-season starts.
Everyone saw the scenes last season, on the last day. Obviously, the club got promoted, just seeing those scenes made me want to be a part of it. Hopefully, we can make more memories like that.”
Humphrys will give Alexander a different option across his attacking line, with the Salford City boss saying:
“Stephen will add genuine pace and power to our front line, while giving us an extra goal threat with his finishing ability.
“I believe he has his best years ahead of him. After meeting with Stephen, I know he is determined and ambitious enough to put the work in to become an even better player. We are very happy to have him here.”
Writer’s View
Few begrudged Bradford’s promotion last season, with many accepting that they are indeed somewhat of a sleeping giant. They have been languishing amongst League One and Two for the last 20 years, but this is a club that was playing in the Premier League at the turn of the century. Humphrys may not be the most prolific striker but he is certainly someone who can upset an opposing defence. A good addition for the Bantams.
