Walsall are on the verge of bolstering their forward line with the signing of Aaron Pressley from League One side Stevenage, with a deal believed to be nearing completion despite competition from other League Two clubs.
The 6ft 4in striker, once on the books at Aston Villa and Brentford, has been granted permission to leave Stevenage, who had an option to extend his contract for another year. However, that clause will not be exercised, paving the way for Walsall to swoop. The Saddlers, managed by Mat Sadler, are reportedly set to pay a fee for the 23-year-old as part of the transfer.
Pressley spent the second half of last season on loan at Barrow, where he scored four goals in 21 appearances, including a standout brace in a win over MK Dons in April. His performances have reignited interest in his potential, with Walsall emerging as the frontrunners in a competitive race to secure his signature.
Big Frame, Big Opportunity
Born in Edinburgh, Pressley moved south at a young age and joined Aston Villa’s academy in 2013. He remained there until 2020, before joining Brentford, where he impressed in their B team. Despite his prolific form at youth level, he made just three senior appearances for the Bees and instead gained experience through loan spells with AFC Wimbledon and Accrington Stanley.
In 2023, he moved permanently to Stevenage, but opportunities in the first team were limited, prompting the recent loan to Barrow. Now, with a fresh start on the horizon, Walsall believe they can be the club to unlock his potential.
Mat Sadler has been proactive in reshaping his squad after Walsall’s narrow play-off final defeat to AFC Wimbledon last season. Several attacking players are departing, including Danny Johnson, Jamille Matt, and Albert Adomah, leaving a vacancy for fresh attacking impetus.
Pressley’s aerial presence and work rate are expected to complement Sadler’s tactical approach, especially in a division known for its physical demands. Should the move go through as expected, he would become the club’s latest summer recruit following the arrival of Courtney Clarke from Eastbourne Borough.
