Bradford City Defender Targeted By League Two Rivals

Cheltenham Town boss Michael Flynn has admitted he would like to re-sign Bradford City defender Sam Stubbs.

The former Exeter City man was a regular for The Bantams last season but was shifted out of Graham Alexander’s plans with the signings of Notts County‘s Aden Baldwin and Barnsley loanee Jack Shepherd. He was loaned out to The Robins in August and has played 38 times for the club.

Flynn Reveals Interest

Speaking to a fan’s forum on Wednesday 26th March, Town boss Michael Flynn offered a candid response when he was asked if he would want Stubbs to remain at Whaddon Road beyond his loan spell. He said (Quotes via Gloucestershire Live):

“There’s always a chance! I’ll put him in a headlock tomorrow! I’m speaking to Sam so we will see. He’s been excellent for us.

“For me if we did sign him, he would have to be a potential captain. He’s been a breath of fresh air. He’s a fantastic professional and a fantastic human being so I can’t speak highly enough of him.”

Stubbs’ contract ends at the end of this season, meaning that Cheltenham can secure the defender on a free transfer, as was his last two moves to Bradford and Exeter.

Writer’s View

Sam Stubbs seems to be out of Bradford City’s plans and a move to Cheltenham Town seems to be his best option. He has been a brilliant figure for The Robins this season and has been a very stable and reliable option for the club, albeit with a few errors. With the free agent signing of Romoney Crichlow in the middle of the season, it is unlikely that City will look for a replacement, but either way Graham Alexander’s side will have to find new players over the summer with a likely step up to League One and probably seeing Jack Shepherd return to Barnsley and become a regular for The Tykes.
