Wigan Athletic v Barnsley: Predictions, Lineups, and Odds (29/3)

This League One match is tricky to call as both teams are relatively safe from any late season drama. Barnsley still have an outside chance at the playoffs, and their hosts Wigan Athletic should be good to survive the relegation dogfight.

Our Three Predictions For Wigan Athletic v Barnsley

  • Prediction 1 – Match To End In A Draw – 53/25
  • Prediction 2 – Barnsley To Win – 7/4
  • Prediction 3 – Both Teams To Score – Yes – 3/4

First Prediction For Wigan Athletic v Barnsley – Match To End In A Draw – 53/25

Games between these two teams have been very close, and in fact in the last six games there have only been seven goals. The fact that both have reached a point in the season where they are clear of any promotion or relegation battles, this could be another stalemate. Wigan, at home, have only drawn four times in this campaign, but 10 overall, a reason why they have been edging closer to safety. Barnsley have been quite decisive away from home, and only have one draw to their record so far when on the road. They have eight overall, and those home draws have been a reason why they are not likely to threaten reaching the playoffs.

Second Prediction For Wigan Athletic v Barnsley – Barnsley To Win – 7/4

Should there a be a winner in this League One match, then the edge goes to Barnsley. They do have the greater need in terms of any chance of reaching the playoffs, but some recent inconsistencies have shown them up to be a team already building for next year. They have the fourth best away record in the division, which is not bad considering the teams that are competing near the top. 10 wins from the 19 played on the road, have almost been balanced out with 8 losses. They have no trouble scoring on the road either with 26 goals, and this could be a reason why Wigan will be hard to stop them sneaking a win. The Latics have conceded 20 at home, having been outscored by three, and their eight home defeats means they sit with a 6th worst home record in League One.

Third Prediction For Wigan Athletic v Barnsley – Both Teams To Score – Yes – 3/4

Even though past games suggest a low scoring game will be on the cards, you also get the feeling that this game could offer both teams a chance to add to their scoring tally. The reason why both sides have failed to inspire is because they have a habit of conceding too many. Wigan have conceded 20 at home, and a huge 54 overall, so where they are mean on home soil, they can be shot at. Likewise Barnsley also suffer at the back. 24 times they have been breached on the road, and that despite being ranked fourth at home. The have scored 26 times away, and will like their chances of scoring at least once in a game they must win to keep lingering playoff chances alive. Wigan will also feel they can score on The Tykes, making this a good bet.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head To Head

Wigan Athletic have endured a mixed season so far, and will want to end on a high, but recent losses to Reading and Charlton Athletic have shown they still have a way to go under manager Ryan Lowe. Their somewhat haphazard defending has meant they have never failed to put a decent run together, leaving them in the bottom half of the table. Jason Kerr has played the most of any outfield Wigan player this season – only outplayed by goalkeeper Sam Tickle – and the 28 year old Scottish defender needs to keep his back line in shape, and Will Aimson will help in doing that. Up front Dale Taylor has cored eight goals, and also matched that figure with seven assists. Jensen Weir has cemented his place in midfield but has yet to grab a goal, and the midfield area is very lacking in firepower.

Barnsley will still have hopes of a late run for the playoffs, but the top sides are so consistent, this may prove beyond them. While there is still hope, Conor Hourihane will have his troops fired up. This will be a big win if they get it and may ignite that late push. They will have to sharped up at the back on their travels though and the gaffer will want his team to snap a run of four games without a win. Davis Keillor-Dunn has scored 13 times in his 34 appearances, and has been one of the Tykes players of the season, Striker Adam Phillips has bagged nine goals, and Max Watters has chipped in with six. If these three can stay fit and keep the scoreboard ticking over then there may still be a chance, albeit slim, of extending their season.
