‘A Crazy Season’ – Middlesbrough Man Opens Up On Riverside Exit

Brayden Johnson believes his loan move to Gateshead has come at the perfect time, as the teenage midfielder looks to test himself in a promotion-chasing side battling for every point.

The 18-year-old only joined Middlesbrough in January following a standout season in the National League South with Eastbourne Borough, but has now taken the next step in his development by heading to the National League on loan. He will spend the remainder of the season at Gateshead, who remain in the play-off positions despite a poor run of form.

Gateshead, currently sixth in the table, have suffered five consecutive defeats but are still pushing for a place in League Two next season. With just seven matches remaining, the Heed are in urgent need of fresh energy, and Johnson is relishing the challenge ahead.

Big stage awaits as Johnson looks to make impact

Johnson’s move to the International Stadium mirrors previous short-term spells enjoyed by former Boro youth midfielders Connor Malley and Kamil Conteh at the Tyneside club. Both gained valuable experience with the Heed, although neither ultimately made the grade at the Riverside Stadium. Johnson will be hoping to buck that trend.

The youngster has featured six times for Boro’s under-21s since his arrival but is now eager to make an impact in a first-team environment with real pressure attached – something he believes will fast-track his development at a crucial stage.

“I’m excited to get started and push on to put my best performances in for this club. It’s been a bit of a crazy season for me, and I’m excited to be here. I’ll be looking to add to the good season that I’ve had already. I feel like experience at this level will prove very useful. I’m excited to be here and I’ll be playing without fear.

“I heard about the interest a little while ago and it just felt like a good idea to come here. It’s that time of the season where results are what matters and I’m willing to put everything in for this club and do whatever it takes to help get results. I won’t stop running.”

Johnson’s arrival comes as manager Carl Magnay looks to steady the ship. The former Pools captain has already added striker Frank Nouble to his ranks and is expected to remain active in the final hours before the non-league transfer window closes.

Writer’s view

Gateshead’s recent slump has come at the worst possible time in the season – but Brayden Johnson offers a timely injection of drive and dynamism. While he’s still raw, the teenager has already racked up over 30 senior appearances this term and speaks with the maturity of a player who understands the demands of professional football.
