Chesterfield have revealed that midfielder Tim Akinola has left the club to join Gateshead.
The 23-year-old rejoined the Derbyshire side at the start of this season after a brief stint with Qatari side Al Bidda. He joined the club on a one-year contract, with an option to extend that further.
Akinola Heads To National League
Akinola’s first season at Chesterfield saw the club head into the fifth-tier playoffs but fell short of promotion to the National League in heartbreaking fashion at Wembley against Notts County. However, upon his return, he failed to make his way as a regular starter in Paul Cook’s side and was loaned out Dagenham and Redbridge in August.
The Nigerian player made two appearances back in League Two over the festive period before being sent out to Solihull Moors, but departed this month to link up with Gateshead on a permanent basis.
Speaking to the North East club upon his arrival, he said:
“When Gateshead came in for me it was a no brainer. I wanted to go somewhere and start enjoying football properly. I can’t wait for the game, I’m quite excited for it.”
The Heed are currently in the play-off places and Akinola joins Middlesbrough loanee Brayden Johnson and Carlisle United‘s Ethan Robson as new signings at the International Stadium over the past 48 hours.
Writer’s View
Tim Akinola failed to replicate his performances from his last stint at Chesterfield and was very swiftly moved out of the club. He has struggled for minutes even in the National League, only playing seven times total for both Dagenham and Redbridge and Solihull Moors. Gateshead have had a very horrible time as of late and are already adding to their squad as the play-off picture becomes clear. They have a four point advantage over Altrincham with seven games to go and face league leaders Barnet this weekend.
