David McGoldrick Reveals Notts County Ambition

Notts County striker David McGoldrick has revealed that he is keen to secure a new contract at his boyhood club.

The 37-year-old is approaching the end of the two-year deal he signed in 2023 after joining from then League One outfit Derby County. It was an emotional return for the veteran, who had risen through the ranks at Meadow Lane before going on to have a stellar career which has seen him spend the majority of his time playing in the Premier League and the Championship.

McGoldrick has had another excellent season in front of goal, scoring 14 times in 26 League Two appearances. However, he has spent time on the sidelines, although returned as a substitute in the important 2-0 win over Grimsby Town on Tuesday night, scoring the second goal.

The Magpies are hoping to earn a spot in the third tier next season. They currently sit fourth in the division, one point behind third-placed Doncaster Rovers with 10 games remaining.

McGoldrick Hoping To Extend Career

County host Chesterfield tomorrow afternoon as they look to keep the pace with the top three. For McGoldrick, extending his stay in his home town whilst earning promotion would be the icing on the cake. Speaking to BBC Radio Nottinghamthe former Sheffield United star said:

“That gives you the drive as well, because maybe when you have years on your contract you can get comfy. I’ve been there.

“There are 10 games left and I know what I’m playing for. I’m playing for the club to get high up the league and playing for myself to try to get another contract.”

On the prospect of promotion, McGoldrick said:

“It’s the dream, dream.

“The dream was to come back and play and the double dream is to get the club high up in the league. We will have 10 games left and lots can happen.”

Writer’s View

Barring any disasters, it would be a major shock if Notts County opted not to extend McGoldrick’s deal. He may be a player who is in the twilight years of his career, but his experience and eye for goal are key components to any successful team. Not to mention that the younger players coming through will learn a lot from his presence. Whatever division the Magpies are in next season, expect the 37-year-old to be at Meadow Lane, even if it is a reduced role.
