Huddersfield Town Owner Discusses Michael Duff Sacking

Huddersfield Town owner Kevin Nagle has spoken about the decision to sack Michael Duff and his optimism about Jon Worthington’s interim spell.

The Terriers acted to remove the former Barnsley boss from his post after they dropped out of the League One play-off places following their loss to Bristol Rovers two weeks ago. B Team coach Jonathan Worthington was given temporary charge of the club for the second time in his career and led the side to a brilliant 5-1 win over Crawley Town.

Nagle Discusses Duff Decision

Speaking to the club’s official media channels, owner Kevin Nagle spoke about Michael Duff and his successor, who will stay in charge for the remainder of the season. (Quotes via Yorkshire Live)

“I really liked Michael Duff a lot. I think in so many ways, he was really a great coach, but we know that there was a time in the season that it was a struggle.

“We worked with him to try to see if we could remedy those things, but unfortunately we had to make the change.

“I’m really excited to have Jon Worthington come on board. Jon is familiar with the club, he bleeds Huddersfield Town AFC, he’s a Yorkshireman, so I’m delighted.

“I think the reality of it is that you saw what Jon performed in his first match that he had against Crawley, and I was delighted, and really enthusiastic about the last nine games.”

Town travel down to South London to face playoff rivals Charlton Athletic as their top six hopes remain in their own hands.

Kevin Nagle could have shown some more patience with Michael Duff as the season edged to its conclusion but with Town wanting an immediate return to the Championship and their playoff chances hanging by a thread, a decision had to be made. Jon Worthington’s tenure started in brilliant fashion but results have to keep coming and with a lengthy injury list, the odds are stacking against them. Charlton Athletic is not an easy task to manage and it could be a very tough ask to beat one of League One’s best teams on the road. Games against Wycombe Wanderers, Stockport County and most crucially Leyton Orient on the final day of the season are also on the horizon for them to maintain a top six place.
