Coventry City Set To Make Free Agent Decision

Coventry City are set to sign striker Jamie Paterson on a short-term deal according to reports.

The former Swansea City man has been without a club since leaving MLS side Charlotte FC, managed by former Aston Villa head coach Dean Smith. He was released in December and has since been training with The Sky Blues.

Paterson Makes Championship Return

According to Tom Coleman of Wales Online, the 33-year-old is set to sign for Frank Lampard’s side on a short-term deal after a successful trial spell in the West Midlands, making an official return to English football since leaving Swansea.

Currently, Coventry have been struggling to find goals with their strikers, with none of them surpassing five goals this season. They were handed a boost over midweek with the return of Ephron Mason-Clark to the lineup having missed over a month with an injury.

Despite those struggles, Frank Lampard have got the club moving in the right direction with five wins in their last six Championship games, losing to Leeds United in the other result. They also suffered a fourth-round FA Cup exit at the hands of Premier League side Ipswich Town.

They face a crunch fixture with Sheffield Wednesday this weekend, with a win for Coventry potentially putting them in touching distance of the play-off places providing results go their way.

Coventry made very few additions in January, bringing in just Matt Grimes from Swansea City. A move for Paterson gives Frank Lampard more choice in his attacking options and adds plenty of Championship experience with Jamie Paterson. His last season in the second tier was one of the better campaigns in his career and should he be given chances at The Sky Blues, he could be a very good free-agent addition to bolster their play-off hopes. With only four points separating them from Blackburn Rovers in fifth, it is certainly achievable.
