Blackburn Rovers put their off-field distractions to one side as they secured an impressive 2-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion, lifting themselves into fifth place in the Championship.
With David Lowe taking interim charge following John Eustace’s impending move to Derby County, Rovers ended a five-match winless run away from home thanks to two second-half goals from Makhtar Gueye.
Gueye Strikes Twice to Seal Victory
In a first half devoid of quality, neither side could stamp their authority on the game. Callum Brittain sent an ambitious effort over the bar for the visitors, while Tyrhys Dolan failed to trouble Joe Wildsmith with a tame shot.
West Brom came closest before the break when Torbjorn Heggem’s header clipped the outside of the post, but the game sprung to life immediately after half-time.
Gueye burst into the penalty area and went down under a challenge from Mason Holgate, appearing to appeal for a spot-kick. However, referee David Webb awarded only a corner, and it was from the resulting set-piece that Rovers found the breakthrough.
John Buckley’s delivery from the left was nodded back across goal by Dom Hyam, and Gueye reacted quickest, producing a sharp volley that squeezed past Wildsmith at the near post.
Any hope of a comeback was extinguished just after the hour mark. With West Brom’s defensive shape in disarray, Gueye found himself unmarked eight yards out and calmly slotted home to double Blackburn’s advantage.

Frustration for West Brom
Mowbray made four changes in a bid to inspire his side, but the Baggies lacked their usual fluency in attack, failing to score at home for the first time since early November.
Blackburn, meanwhile, saw out the game with composure, sealing a much-needed victory after a turbulent few days off the pitch.
“It’s been a difficult week, so to come to a place like this and perform like we did in and out of possession was a great credit to the lads,” said interim boss David Lowe. “It’s sad to see John Eustace and the other two coaches go. They’ve worked really hard here. We’ll just keep on going until an announcement is made. And we’re now just focusing on Saturday.”
Writer’s View
Despite all the off-field uncertainty, Blackburn showed remarkable focus to secure a crucial victory. Gueye delivered his best performance since joining, proving to be a real presence in the box. Lowe deserves credit for keeping his squad motivated, and with Eustace’s departure confirmed, Rovers must now build on this result.
