Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl has expressed his disappointment after key defender Di’Shon Bernard was ruled out for the remainder of the season with a serious injury.
The 24-year-old sustained the setback during last weekend’s clash against West Brom and is set to undergo surgery, with an expected recovery period of around six months.
Bernard’s Absence a Major Setback
Bernard has been a key figure in Wednesday’s defensive setup this season, making 31 appearances across all competitions and contributing three goals. His absence leaves a significant gap in the Owls’ backline as they battle to secure their Championship status.
Rohl, speaking to the club’s official website, shared his frustration over the news:
“It’s a hard one, Dish is out of the season now, a big injury, it looks like six months so a big one. Tomorrow he will have a surgery. It’s very hard and also very sad but I think I said this straight after the game, I did not have a good feeling.
“We have to step up with all the other players around us, it is not an easy situation, but we will stick together and help him through this.
“I cross my fingers for a good surgery tomorrow and then a good recovery. It’s not easy to take but we will help him come back stronger.”

Bernard’s Journey at Hillsborough
The Jamaica international, who has 19 caps for his country, joined Sheffield Wednesday in 2023 following the club’s promotion from League One. He played a key role in their survival last season and had continued to impress in the current campaign.
Born in London, Bernard came through Chelsea’s academy before moving to Manchester United, where he progressed through the youth ranks and made one senior appearance. Loan spells at Salford City, Hull City, and Portsmouth provided him with vital experience before his permanent move to Hillsborough.
His absence will force Rohl to explore alternative defensive options, with the Owls needing to reshuffle their backline in the coming weeks.
Writer’s View
This injury is a major blow for Sheffield Wednesday at a crucial point in the season. Bernard has been a rock at the back, and his leadership in defence will be tough to replace. Rohl now faces a tough task in reshaping his side while ensuring they stay competitive in the Championship. The focus will be on rallying the squad, but Wednesday will certainly miss Bernard’s presence on the pitch.
