Wrexham’s strategic approach to squad building is proving to be a key factor in their impressive rise, with CEO Michael Williamson emphasising the club’s commitment to blending experience with long-term talent.
Since his appointment last May, Williamson has overseen two transfer windows at the Racecourse Ground, helping shape a squad that remains firmly in the League One promotion race.
Three key additions were made in January to bolster Phil Parkinson’s side—Ryan Longman, 24, from Hull City, striker Sam Smith, 26, from Reading, and seasoned Premier League forward Jay Rodriguez, 35, from Burnley.
Strategic Recruitment for Sustained Success
Williamson, who has held key roles at Inter Milan, DC United, and Miami FC, outlined Wrexham’s recruitment strategy, highlighting the importance of balancing immediate needs with a sustainable long-term vision.
“We have to make sure that we support Phil and give ourselves and him the best chance to get promoted.
“In 90 minutes anything can happen, but what we wanted to do was make sure that we provided him the support that he felt was necessary.
“We have a committee that works as a transfer committee; myself, Shaun Harvey, Humphrey Ker, Phil and Les Reed, so that helps us kind of stress test any signings that we’re looking to make.”
This blend of experience and youthful potential is evident in Wrexham’s latest signings. Smith, a consistent goal-scorer at League One level, brings reliability at 26, while Rodriguez, with over 200 Premier League appearances, adds valuable leadership and winning mentality.

On Track for Another Promotion
Wrexham, backed by their high-profile ownership and well-structured transfer policy, continue to thrive in their bid for a third successive promotion. Williamson believes that their recruitment strategy has played a major role in their success.
“Finding that balance is something that we, as a club, have been able to do pretty successfully over these last two transfer windows and it’s been great because I think you can see the success on the pitch,” he added.
With a strong squad in place, Wrexham’s ambitions remain high as they look to secure a place in the Championship.
Writer’s View
Wrexham’s steady rise through the football pyramid is no fluke. Their recruitment strategy, combining proven performers with long-term prospects, is a model of sustainability. The additions of Smith and Rodriguez reflect a club thinking beyond just one promotion, aiming to build a squad capable of thriving at higher levels. With the right balance in place, Wrexham look well-equipped for the challenges ahead.
