Reading Linked With Move For Former Arsenal Defender

Reading FC have been linked with a summer move for Doncaster Rovers centre-back Joseph Olowu, with the defender set to become a free agent at the end of the season.

The 25-year-old has been a mainstay for Doncaster since joining in 2021, making nearly 150 appearances and helping Grant McCann’s side push for promotion from League Two.

Championship and League One Clubs Monitoring Olowu

According to reports from respected outlet Football League World, Reading are one of several clubs tracking Olowu’s situation, with Hull City and Derby County also considering a move. With his contract at the Eco-Power Stadium set to expire in the summer, the Nigerian-born defender could be available on a free transfer.

Olowu, who started his career at Arsenal and had a trial at Manchester United in 2021, never made a senior appearance for the Gunners but gained experience with loan spells at Cork City and Wealdstone before settling at Doncaster.

His performances this season have been instrumental in Rovers’ promotion push, with the centre-back making 26 League Two appearances, winning 150 duels, and contributing three goals and two assists.

Reading’s Defensive Plans for Next Season

With Tyler Bindon set to join Nottingham Forest in the summer and current centre-backs Harlee Dean and Amadou Mbengue both facing uncertain futures due to expiring contracts, Reading are expected to strengthen their defensive options.

Olowu’s impressive displays, particularly in Doncaster’s FA Cup matches against Hull City and Crystal Palace, have showcased his ability to perform against higher-tier opposition, making him an attractive option for clubs looking to bolster their backline.

While Doncaster would have hoped to cash in on one of their standout players, the likelihood of him leaving on a free transfer will be a blow for McCann’s side.

Writer’s View

Olowu’s availability on a free transfer makes him an appealing prospect for Reading, especially given their need for defensive reinforcements. His consistent performances in League Two and solid showings against Championship and Premier League opponents suggest he could make the step up. If Reading can secure his signature, it could prove to be a smart piece of business as they aim to strengthen their squad for the future.
