Carlisle United Make Major Decision

Carlisle United have finally called time on Mike Williamson’s time in charge of the club following their harrowing loss to Swindon Town.

The Cumbrians appointed the former Newcastle United defender from MK Dons after they dismissed Paul Simpson earlier in the season. However, it has been a dire time at Brunton Park, with 14 losses in 25 matches.

Sacking Decision Made

In a statement published on the club’s website, Carlisle announced the decision to remove Williamson. It read:

Carlisle United Football Club can confirm that head coach Mike Williamson has this morning been relieved of his duties and has left the club with immediate effect.

Everyone at the club would like to thank Mike for his efforts during his time at the club.

The club will give a further update in the coming days.

United are currently bottom of League Two and five points adrift of safety in the fourth tier. They play Grimsby Town this weekend.

Writer’s View

It is surprising that it has taken this long to dismiss Mike Williamson at Carlisle United. He had to be given time to begin with after what was a dismal start under Paul Simpson but there has been no improvements since then and can be argued has got the setup wrong with how he has used players not used to his system. If his tactics didn’t work, he should have changed that but held steadfast and has put Carlisle in a very dangerous position now. The fans very quickly turned on him and arguments can be made that this decision should have been made at least a month earlier than it has been.

The Cumbrians and the Piatak family now have to get this next decision right or it will cost them their place in the Football League. Two proven EFL managers have come in and failed at the club so perhaps now is the time to take a major gamble and appoint an up-and-coming coach. York City‘s Adam Hinshelwood could be a good choice but it seems unlikely that they will be able to tempt him from The Minstermen and their solid position in the National League.
